The Churubusco Lady Eagles softball team held their awards banquet Wednesday, June 6 at the Churubusco High School.
The Lady Eagles ended the year 11-16 losing to the 2A state runner-up Adams Central Flying Jets in the first game of the Sectional by a score of 2-1. The Lady Eagles had beaten Adams Central 10-8 in the regular season. Ten of the Lady Eagles’ opponents were ranked in the top 20 in state, making for a very difficult schedule.
“Although we fell short of the season goal of winning the Sectional, the coaching staff felt with the exception of three or four games, the girls competed and gave themselves a chance in every game,” said Coach Wayne Gibson. “That is all we can ask for. Now we have to keep working to improve like we can.”
The Lady Eagles graduate no seniors and return all the starters from this year’s team.
“We really felt we could win this new Sectional and now look forward to getting after them again next year,” said Coach Gibson. “The girls definitely want a rematch. Several underclassmen will be putting the pressure on the returning players for playing time.”
The Lady Eagles produced several statistics that made the softball record book.
“I am really proud of the team offensive output this year,” explained Coach Gibson. “Stats and records only really mean anything when the season is over. We stress to the girls that winning is the only stat that matters while we are playing, but the team and several individuals had really good years.”
The team had the seventh highest batting average for a team at .307 and the ninth highest fielding percentage at .923. The team had the sixth best season ever in doubles and triples with 38 and 14 respectively. The team came in eighth all time with 224 hits.
Several individuals made entries into the record book as well with Savannah Labenz with 68 hits and Chandler Blake with 72 hits making the career hits list. Kasey Gibson moved to the top of the career hit list by recording her 147th hit, breaking the old record of Taylor Amber of 132.
“I told the girls that they could be the first to have three players in the top ten all time career hits and I fully expect that to happen,” stated Coach Gibson.
Mariah Herendeen moved into the career entries for strikeouts with 119 and innings pitched 263 with the potential to move into the top five of those categories next year. Brooke Herendeen tied for ninth best RBI season with 26 and had the 21st best season in hits with 31.
Gibson improved her career steal record to 125 and broke the school record for singles at 112. Gibson also entered the record book for season and career doubles with 10 for the season and 20 career and triples with five for the season and 10 for career. Gibson also had the second best season in runs scored at 37 which helped her career run total of 100 moving her into second place all time.
Gibson, as a junior, was elected first team all state after being selected third team in her sophomore year. She led the team in hitting .538, hits 49, runs 37, stolen bases 40, on base percentage .592, OPS 1.350, doubles 10, and triples five. Her 127 career stolen bases is second all time in the Indiana record book and her 147 hits is on pace to be top five all time in the Indiana record book. Gibson has committed verbally to play for Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee of the Atlantic Sun Conference on a Division I athletic scholarship after her high school career.
