The Churubusco boy’s basketball team hosted the Leo Lions and came up victorious with a 77-68 final score.
Josh LeFever scored the first bucket with less than four seconds off the clock. The Lions answered with two, three-pointers. The Eagles came back with a basket from Tyler Arrowsmith and Austin Goepfrich to tie the game 6-6. Arrowsmith  got an offensive rebound and put the ball back up for two points and the lead. Leo would then go on a 7-0 run. Churubusco started their fight back. The Eagles would get two points from Brent Simmons. The Lions went to the free-throw line and went 1-2. The Eagles got a basket from LeFever and the Lions would answer  with a two-pointer. Then Arrowsmith fought for an offensive rebound, put it in for two, got fouled, and made the free throw. The Eagles received the ball back off a defensive rebound and got two more points from LeFever and from Simmons to make it 17-16 Churubusco.
“I thought Chris Jones, Dylan Jones, and Austin Goepfrich were a real key tonight,” said Coach Michael McBride. “They had some turnovers, but when you consider the amount of pressure they were under for the duration of that game, what a great job they did. They are the reason that Arrowsmith and LeFever could put up the 54 points. Also, Brent Simmons gave us real good minutes off the bench. What a great job he did tonight.”
Churubusco was the first to score in the second quarter with a basket from LeFever. Leo would get two points on the scoreboard off an offensive rebound. Next Dylan Jones made a two point basket for the Eagles to make it 23-18 Churubusco. Leo answered with a basket of their own. Arrowsmith made two baskets in a row to give the Eagles four more points. The Lions made a three, but fouled Arrowsmith who made two from the free-throw line. Arrowsmith then blocked a shot that set up a two point lay-up from LeFever. Churubusco received the ball back off a defensive rebound from Chris Jones and that led to two more points from LeFever. The Lions made a three and the Eagles  answered with two more points from LeFever. Leo made another three and Churubusco received a basket from Chris Jones to end the half 37-29 Churubusco.
“We talked about shot selection,” explained Coach McBride. “Our kids realize that if we pass the ball a little bit, we can get a high percentage shot.”
Churubusco started the third quarter just like the first and second, LeFever making a basket. Leo made a three-pointer and LeFever answered with a two-pointer. The Lions made a basket and LeFever made a lay-up for the Eagles. Leo went on a 7-0 run to bring the score to 43-41 Churubusco. The Eagles answered with a  5-0 run getting points from Arrowsmith and Chris Jones. Leo made a basket and got one from the free-throw line. LeFever made another lay-up for the Eagles. Then Leo made one from the line and Churubusco went on another 5-0 run to end the third quarter 55-45.
“I thought we did an excellent job on defense,” stated Coach McBride. “They are averaging 80 points a game and to keep them under 70, is just something you don’t see very much.”

The Lions hit a three and put Arrowsmith on the line who went 1-2. Churubusco got a basket from Dylan Jones and then Leo made two quick buckets. Goepfrich would make a basket for the Eagles. The Lions made two from the three-throw line and LeFever went 1-2. Leo went 1-2 from the free-throw line and Churubusco scored on a two-pointer from LeFever. The Lions  answered with a three- pointer. Then Arrowsmith battled for an offensive rebound and put it back in for two more points for the Eagles. Leo scored two and made a free throw  but Churubusco received a basket from Goepfrich. The Lions hit another three, but LeFever made another lay-up. Leo made one more three to end the game 77-68 Churubusco.
“We had a lot of unselfish play tonight by all the players,” said Coach McBride. “I couldn’t be happier with tonight’s win.”
