The Eagles finished second with 151.5 total points behind an Angola team that received first place with 162.5 points and Fairfield came in third with 149.5 points. Churubusco had 13 guys wrestling on Saturday and 10 of them placed. “Coming into today, we were going to be upset with anything less than a championship,” said Coach Sam Riesen. “We didn’t wrestle bad, but we didn’t execute the way we should have to win conference.” Jason Nicodemus was crowned champion in the 170 pound weight class. Nicodemus wrestled Zach Rupright from West Noble in the final match and defeated Rupright in a 7-3 decision. “Nicodemus came out and wrestled in a hard match today,” explained Coach Riesen. “Nicodemus got himself caught in a dangerous situation but still pulled it out. We have to work on those errors that we are seeing our wrestlers make.” Sam Siddons was crowned champion in the 182 weight class defeating Dalton Hinen from Fairfiend in a 2-1 decision which Siddons had lost to earlier in the season in the final seconds of their dual match. “Siddons beat a guy that was undefeated in the championship match today,” stated Coach Riesen. “Siddons is wrestling real well right now and he can compete with about anyone in semi- state.” Also making it to the finals and coming up just short were Chase Downing and Brian Richardson. Downing faced Forrest Glofouski from Fairfield in the championship match of the 120 pound weight class. Glofouski defeated Downing 12-5. “Downing wrestled really well today,” said Coach Riesen. “He has a tendency to make some freshman mistakes and we really didn’t see him make those today. In my opinion, he wrestled a lot better than last week’s finals.” Richardson was defeated by Zach Goodyear from West Noble in the 195 pound weight class. Goodyear pinned Richardson in 2:41. Adam Boggess finished with a third place finish in the 138 weight class. Boggess defeated Spencer Richter from Central Noble with a pin in 0:22 in the consolation match. Joey Heaton also finished third for the Eagles with a 10-6 decision over Nathan Hippenhammer from Lakeland in the 145 pound weight class. Gunnar Barnhart received a third place finish in the 220 weight class defeating Adam Dossett from Fremont in a 4-1 decision in the consolation round. Shane Shroyer placed fourth in the 126 pound weight class falling to James Barryo from Angola in a 10-6 decision. Austin Boggess finished in fifth place in the 132 weight class. To finish in fifth, Boggess defeated Tony Steglich from Westview in a 6-2 decision. Brad Martin finished sixth for the Eagles in the 285 weight class losing in the consolation round to Brock Bergman from Lakeland with a pin in 2:15.
