The Churubusco boys’ basketball team picked up two wins this week by beating Manchester 57-25 and defeated Prairie Heights 44-32. The Eagles have evened their record at 3-3 for the season and are 2-1 in the NECC.
Busco got off to a fast start and were up 21-5 at quarter’s end. Josh LeFever had 11 points in the opening period, Tyler Arrowsmith scored six and Dylan Jones had four. Churubusco continued to get the ball in to Arrowsmith in the second quarter and it paid off as he would put in eight points. Corey Sarrazin added the other four points for the Eagles as they extended the halftime lead to 33-10.
“We were really sharp on Saturday and only had one day to prepare for tonight,” explained Coach Michael McBride. “We really talked about being focused and doing what we do. I was really pleased with our start. Our seniors really did a good job for us in the first quarter coming out and playing good hard man to man defense.”
In the third period the Eagles and Squires mixed it up a little bit. Manchester got on the board first with two points. Then LeFever would score the next five points and the Squires answered with four points. Arrowsmith  added five third quarter points and Austin Goepfrich  hit a three-pointer for the Eagles as they lead by 25 points after three quarters. Churubusco held Manchester to just two points in the final period and finished with nine of their own.
“It was important to us that if we didn’t get anything in transition, to make sure we were patient enough offensively to get it down to Arrowsmith,” explained Coach McBride. “I thought Chris Jones did a really good job for us at the point guard position. He controlled things and got the ball inside well.”
Friday night at Prairie Heights the Eagles fell behind early 6-2 after a couple of three-pointers by the Panthers. Dylan Jones hit a pair of baskets to tie the game. Then Arrowsmith hit two more baskets and Chris Jones finished the quarter scoring two. Churubusco would carry their run into the second period as Dylan Jones hit another basket and LeFever had old fashion three-point play to complete the Eagles 15-0 run. Arrowsmith and LeFever each made another basket and the Eagles lead 21-11 at the break.
The third quarter began with some good defense and some cold shooting by both teams. Dylan Jones was the first to score in the third quarter with under four minutes remaining. Goepfrich hit a three-pointer and LeFever made a bucket to put the Eagles up 28-13 with a minute left in the period. Chris Jones hit a free throw to account for the Eagles last point in the quarter.
In the final stanza Joe Zumbrun scored two for the Eagles to give them a 16 point lead. Prairie Heights cut into the lead scoring five unanswered points and then another 6-2 run had them within nine points at 39-30 with 1:34 remaining. But the Eagles’ held their own as the Panthers made a final charge and won going away with the final points coming on a dunk by LeFever.
The next game will be at Woodlan on January 4th with the JV beginning at 6:00 p.m.
