The Lady Eagles started their sectional play with a win against South Adams and won 42-27. Churubusco advanced to play the hosting Adams Central Lady Jets.
“Adams Central beat us by 10 at our place during the season,” said Coach Jamie Perlich. “We are ready for the rematch. They came to our place and got the win. We just told the girls now we need to give Adams Central a little pay back. We get to come to their gym and get a win here.”
The Jets drained a three-pointer to start the game. Adams Central and Churubusco exchanged baskets all quarter long. The Lady Eagles received baskets from Lacey Pulley, Haleigh Gross, and Montana Martin. The quarter ended 9-6 Adams Central.
The Lady Eagles started the second quarter with a 4-0 run to take the end 10-9. Churubusco received baskets from Gross and free throws from Gross and Pulley. Adams Central answered with two quick baskets to reclaim the lead 14-10. But Gross answered for the Lady Eagles with a big three-pointer. The Lady Jets went on another 4-0 run, but again, Gross stopped the Adams Central run with a three-pointer to end the half 18-16 Adams Central.
“Gross shot the ball really well in the first half,” said Coach Perlich. “She is the one that kept us in the game offensively.”
The Lady Eagles went on a 4-0 run in the third quarter, receiving baskets from Heather Monk and Chandler Blake making it 20-18 Churubusco. The Lady Jets drained a three-pointer with five seconds to go in the third quarter to make it 21-20 Adams Central at the end of the third quarter.
“Defensively, we played an amazing game,” exclaimed Coach Perlich. “We shot every single one of them down.”
Churubusco started the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run. Savannah Labenz made two two-pointers and Gross made a free throw. The Lady Jets made a basket and Martin answered with two freethrows. Adams Central made one free throw and Martin would make four free throws in a row giving the Lady Eagles a 31-24 win over the hosting Adams Central Jets.
“Tonight, we really took away everything that they wanted to do tonight,” explained Coach Perlich. “You could tell how frustrated they were at the end of the game and all that credit goes to our girls.”
The Lady Eagles faced the Bishop Luers Knights in the championship game on Saturday night. The Lady Eagles were defeated 72-27.
“We didn’t give up tonight,” said Morgan Young. “We fought and did as much as we could.”
“We have never given up this year,” said Heather Monk. “I’m proud of us for that and how far we have come together. We really are one big family”
“It’s been a great journey,” said Haleigh Gross. “I’m proud of everyone.”
“It is tough matching up against a team like Luers,” said Coach Perlich. “I’m proud of the girls for the run here at the end of the season. Really, we started playing our best basketball here in the last five, six games of the season.”
“I’m proud of our girls here tonight,” stated Coach Perlich. “They never gave up. Even at the end when we were down 40 points, we still had girls on the floor diving for balls. Great to see and very proud of the effort. Those three seniors (Haleigh Gross, Heather Monk, and Morgan Young) are going to be missed. I started when they were sophomores and had the privilege to coach them for three years. They are a special group to me and it was nice to see all three of them on the floor tonight.”

This fall will mark the 50th season of football here at Churubusco High School. Even though the first two seasons were played at the JV level these two seasons laid the groundwork for the 1965 Varsity season.
I am compiling stats and rosters from all of the seasons. If you have any old football rosters, stats, team pictures or any other interesting facts about Eagle football please bring them up to the newspaper. I would like to have everything together by the end of April so I can organize it and put everything together for this fall.
Also, I would like to hold meetings with former Eagle players and get your stories about football here at Churubusco. Feel free to email me any information you have at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
