JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP -- Kermit R. Hollenbaugh, 77, of Jefferson Township, Whitley County, died at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2010 at his home. He had been in failing health for the past four months.
He was born December 8, 1932 in Laud, a son of Herbert R. and Edna P. (Wince) Hollenbaugh. He graduated from Jefferson Center High School in 1950 and continued his education in civil engineering at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne.
On March 4, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a police officer during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged March 3, 1956.
On August 5, 1961 he was united in marriage to Linda E. Raichart. They made their home in Churubusco until 1965 when they moved to their present home in Jefferson Township.
He retired from International Harvester in 1982 with 31 years of service, worked as a security guard at Parkview Whitley Hospital for eight years and Breyers Ice Cream in Huntington for the past four years.
A member of Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church, he was a past president of the Men’s Brotherhood, taught Sunday School for many years, was a youth leader for 16 years and assisted with United Methodist Senior High Bike Camp for six years.
Surviving are his wife, Linda; niece/foster daughter, Candy Raichart of Roanoke; a sister, Bonita (Richard) VanDuyn of LaHabra Calif.; and three nephews, Richard E. VanDuyn II of LaHabra Calif., Randall VanDuyn of Elgin, Ill. and Kevin Raichart of Fort Myers, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 17 at Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church, 880 E. 1100 N. Roanoke with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Preferred memorials may be made to Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church or Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home.

FORT WAYNE -- Julie A. Hardiek, 80, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at her home.
Born February 9, 1930, Julie was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Alfred H. Hardiek; her sons, Steve Hardiek of Fort Wayne, Richard (Pat) Hardiek of Fort Wayne, Mark (Angela) Hardiek of Avilla and Tim (Lisa) Hardiek of LaOtto; her daughters, Charlotte (Rama) Tavassol of Fort Wayne and Cynthia (Terry) Archer of LaOtto; her sisters, Evelyn Sweeny of Fort Wayne, Marydelle Semler of Warsaw and Betty Keller of Cromwell; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at D. O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 East Dupont Road, with calling one hour prior to service, with the Rev. Dale Henderson officiating. Calling was also from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

CHURUBUSCO -- Robert L. Wheaton, 71, a resident of rural Churubusco, passed away at 11:02 a.m. on Friday, July 9, 2010, at his residence in Smith Township. He had been in failing health since 1996.
Mr. Wheaton was born in Fort Wayne on July 12, 1938, a son of Russell and Lexie (Hughes) Wheaton, and as a young man served with the U. S. Navy.
On March 25, 1960 he was married in Fort Wayne to Regina Lidster. He had been employed for 30 years at Peter Eckrich in Fort Wayne, and later worked for eight years in the maintenance department at Parkview Hospital until illness forced him to retire.
Mrs. Wheaton preceded him in death on September 5, 2007.
The surviving relatives include his four children, Timothy (Betty) Wheaton of Fort Wayne, Kip (Lisa) Wheaton of Churubusco, Kent (Leslie) Wheaton of Fort Wayne, and Dawn (Rob) Riggs of Garrett; his mother, Lexie Eubank of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his father and his wife, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Rose Krock.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 16, 2010, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Corinne K. Boruff, pastor of Churubusco United Methodist Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 4 p.m. on Friday until the time of the service.

CHURUBUSCO -- Leonard N. Hazen, 76, a resident of Churubusco and well-known accountant and community leader, passed away at 9:24 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at the family residence in Smith Township following an extended illness.
Mr. Hazen was born on October 24, 1933 in Smith Township, a son of Chalmer M. and Mildred I. (Linvill) Hazen, and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1951.
On January 26, 1952 he was married in Churubusco to Mary Ann Gross. The couple spent all of their married lives in the Churubusco-area, and had lived at their present home in Smith Township for the past 30 years.
Employed as an auditor for the Indiana State Board of Accounts, he retired from there in 1994 after 24 years. He was also engaged in private client tax preparation for many years.
In addition to his professional and family responsibilities, his life was marked by memberships and active participation in a variety of areas. He was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, where he served in a variety of administrative and leadership capacities over the years. He was a 50-year member, past worshipful master and past treasurer of Churubusco Lodge 515 F&AM; was a 50-year member and past patron of Churubusco Order of the Eastern Star 136; was a member of Scottish Rite, Valley of Fort Wayne; was past treasurer of Friends of Epworth Forest; and was past president of the Churubusco High School Alumni Association.
In his leisure time he enjoyed traveling and jogging, and most especially was a dedicated person to God, his family, his church, and to his friends.
The surviving relatives include his wife, Mary Ann, to whom he was married for over 58 years; two children, Huey (Dianna) Hazen of Churubusco and Karla (Neal) Hart of Kendallville; his brother, Michael E. (Bonnie) Hazen of Churubusco; four grandchildren, Chelsey (Eric) Shilling and Dan Hart, both of Fort Wayne, Paul (Becky) Rennaker of Churubusco, and Melissa (Ken Kruse) Buesching of Fort Wayne; and several step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, in the Churubusco United Methodist Church, with Pastor Corinne K. Boruff, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m., or at the church one hour prior to the service. Churubusco Lodge 515 F&AM will conduct memorial services at 8 p m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Interment will be in the Round Lake Cemetery, Whitley County.

COLUMBIA CITY -- J D "Sonny" Egolf, 87, a former resident of Thorncreek Township and widely acquainted Whitley County farmer and grain dealer, passed away at 3:25 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville following an extended illness. He had been taken to the hospital on Thursday from North Ridge Village in Albion, where he had resided for over three years.
Mr. Egolf was born on the Egolf Homestead in Thorncreek Township on December 18, 1922, a son of Dewey and Eva (Winebrenner) Egolf, and graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1941. As a young man he served with the U. S. Army during World War II, and was married in Columbia City on February 24, 1945 to Ruth Borgman.
He spent most of his life in both Whitley and Noble Counties, and was engaged in farming all of his adult life. He was also the co-owner of Egolf Grain in Whitley County for many years.
Mr. Egolf attended the Blue River Church of the Brethren, served as a deacon at the former Blue River Church of God, and had also served on the board of directors for the Federal Land Bank. He found joy in his work as a farmer, enjoyed tending his livestock, and most especially loved and cherished his family.
Mrs. Egolf preceded him in death on May 2, 1994.
The surviving relatives include his children Dennis (Rebecca) Egolf of Oak Park, Ill., Gary (Cathy) Egolf of Berne, Gail (Judy) Egolf and Jody (John) Long, both of Columbia City, and Cindy (Roberto D'Alonzo) Egolf of Dolce Acqua, Italy; a sister, Faith Richards of Gainsville, Fla; a sister-in-law, Martha Ann Egolf of Churubusco; three grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sylvelda (Harold O.) McCoy; a brother, Russell J. Egolf; a daughter-in-law Marilyn Egolf; and a grandson, Alex Egolf.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Friday, July 9, 2010, in the Blue River Church of the Brethren, 3040 East 700 North, Whitley County, with Pastor Craig Alan Myers, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Thursday from 2-4 and from 6-8 p.m., or at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment with military graveside rites will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

ALBION -- Evelyn A. Wells, 92, died Friday, June 25, 2010, at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne. She had been ill for about a week.
She was born in St. Joe County, Mich. on September 19, 1917, and was the daughter of Marvin and Ethel (Richey) Eames. She spent most of her adult life in the Albion and Churubusco area. On November 28, 1969, she married James Wells in Albion. He died on July 27, 2000.
She was a machine operator at General Electric in Fort Wayne and retired from there after more than 30 years of service. She enjoyed canning, working in her garden, traveling and fishing. She was also a 30-member of the American Legion Post 242 Women’s Auxilliary in Albion.
She is survived by her children, Ellen Dazey and her companion, Charlie Jones of Bonita Springs, Fla.; Floyd and Irene Clingerman of Albion, and Phyllis Smith of Paoli; a stepson and his wife, Robert and Marie Wells of Albion, eight grandchildren, Sue (Larry) Montgomery of Butler, Larry (Marie) Ely of New Haven, Rick Ely of Avilla, Mike Clingerman and Jody Lewis of Albion, Jane (Floyd) Javis of Fort Wayne, Chrissy (Larry) Reed of Zionsville, Kevin Egolf of Huntington, and Todd (Johnine) Clingerman of Columbia City; 12 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and one step-grandchild; and one brother and his wife, Robert and Mary Lou Eames of Kimmell.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; a son, Ronald Clingerman on Nov. 16, 1988; two grandchildren, Terry Clingerman and Curt Clingerman, and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 29, 2010 at Brazzell Funeral Home, Avilla Chapel with Rev. Larry Williams offiating.
Burial took place at Merriam Christian Chapel in Merriam.
Memorials are to the North Ridge Village Nursing Home’s Activites Department.
