AUGUSTA, IL -- Gary Parker, devoted father of Derek, Melissa and Brienna, grandfather of Tye and Cam, and friend of many including his horse Storm and dog Martha.
Born in Mendota, IL March 25, 1950 he died unexpectedly May 6, 2012 at his home in Augusta, IL.
He was a graduate of Churubusco High School. His life was full of adventure and storytelling. Many remember his years as a goaltender, playing in Thompson, Manitoba and Winnipeg, Canada before returning to play in the United States for many teams.  His proudest moments were playing in the United States League for the Milwaukee Admirals 1976-77 and for the Edmonton Oilers system in 1977-78. He then continued playing senior hockey while living in Springfield, IL and Calumet. His years of coaching and running hockey schools extend from the Canadian Professional Hockey School to the Springfield Sting, junior hockey teams in the Calumet Hockey association and Lake Linden High School hockey coach.
As a young Boy Scout he achieved the Eagle Scout Award and was chosen to attend the National Jamboree in Valley Forge, PA. Gary was an avid outdoorsman, fishing in Canada and the Great Lakes, as well as hunting throughout many areas in the US and Canada. He successfully gun and bow hunted bull moose and caribou in Canada, antelope in Wyoming, bull elk in New Mexico, and deer throughout Indiana and Texas with his parents and in Michigan and Illinois with his dearest friends and son Derek.
That love for fishing, hunting and the out-of-doors he has passed on to Derek. A side passion was taxidermy which was visible on the walls of his and many homes. Storytelling with friends was shared from the many wonderful adventures of his life.
He was a self-taught mason known for his skill and artistry especially when it came to building fireplaces. Examples of his expertise with brick and stone can be found throughout the Copper Country.
Gary also loved horses and owned what he considered to be one of the best trail riding horses around, his faithful horse Storm. His skills and excitement of horse riding he passed onto his daughters Melissa and Brienna and throughout the years many hours were shared on the trails and in competitions.
Gary leaves behind Derek, Melissa, Brienna and their mother Brenda, grandsons Tye and Cam, his mother Dorothy, sisters Linda and Mary, and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his father Virgil in 2000.
