INDIANAPOLIS – IN State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, U.S. Senate Candidate in the 2012 Republican Primary against six-term Senator Dick Lugar, signed the U.S. Term Limit (USTL)’s “Amendment Pledge,” in which he agreed to support and co-sponsor an amendment to the U.S. Constitution limiting Congressional terms.
“I feel very strongly that serving in Congress is a privilege, which does carry an enormous amount of responsibility, but I don’t believe the service is meant to be a lifelong career,” stated Treasurer Mourdock. “After so long, elected officials on Capitol Hill succumb to ‘inside-the-beltway’ thinking -- losing touch with the concerns of the average American – which term limits would alleviate.”
USTL’s Amendment Pledge advocates term limits for the U.S. House to three and the U.S. Senate to two.
Philip Blumel, President of USTL, summarized the organization’s opinion of Mourdock’s action in a press release, “Richard Mourdock is leading the way for other candidates for Congress by being an early signer of the term limits pledge.”
Indiana’s Republican Primary race for U.S. Senate provides a classic example of why we need terms limits. Dick Lugar is currently serving his 6th term in the U.S. Senate and is running for a record 7th term.
“In 35 years, Lugar has lost touch with Hoosiers on important issues such as protecting the Second Amendment, raising of the debt ceiling, cutting wasteful government spending, and liberal judicial appointments.
“In fact, Lugar has drifted so far from his Hoosier values that he has earned the title of ‘Obama’s Favorite Republican.’ We need to replace Senator Lugar with a consistent conservative, which is why I am running,”    stated Treasurer Mourdock.
