Six high school students from Churubusco now have the honor of saying they were the first ever group of “fire cadets” in fire department history.
Interest in volunteer firefighting is decreasing across the nation and the Churubusco Smith Township Fire Department hasn’t been immune to this unfortunate trend. As it stands right now, they are short nine regular members and hope to have some of those spots filled in the near future.
The new cadet program allows young adults to learn about the fire service at an early age and provides them with life skills that are priceless.
“Learning the basics of life saving skills and fire prevention, these young adults are part of the future of this community and we’re glad to have every one of them,” said committee chairperson Don Chordas.
Some of the training each recruit receives will be:
* Radio operations;
* Apparatus and equipment;
* Extrication tools (jaws of life);
* Power tool operations.
The recruits will not actually participate in firefighting activities, but will be an additional support system for the firefighters who do the more high-risk work. They are restricted from actual firefighting activities, operation of fire apparatus vehicles, and other environments that would put them in immediate harm.
Each recruit applied to the department just like any other job and were asked in for an interview not only with the four-person committee, but in front of the entire fire department during a regular business meeting.
“Not only are we offering them life saving training, but experience in looking for work in the real world by asking them to apply and be interviewed just like a real job,” said committee member Tadd Shively.
Each member applying also had to meet a short list of minimum requirements including:
* Minimum 15 years of age
* Be enrolled in Junior or Senior High School
* Must maintain a “C” average or better
* Have written permission from parent/guardian.
