Town Marshal Chad Fulkerson will work three days a week at Smith-Green schools for the rest of the school year as the Resource Officer.
Last October, the school requested that Fulkerson work at the school as the Resource Officer two days a week. The Council told school representatives, Shellie Miller and Matt Widenhoefer, that they would allow Fulkerson to work one day per week as long as it didn’t interfere with his town duties.
Smith-Green is in the process of securing a grant to fund a full-time officer in the future and needs data and information collected from the position to be included in the grant process.
The Council also told Miller and Widenhoefer that they wouldn’t put any more money into the project and that the school would have to fund any additional days on their own.
The issue is that if Fulkerson is working at the school as the Student Resource Officer, his hours and duties working for the town would have to be filled by another officer, thus costing the town money for his replacement.
At the January 18th Council meeting, Miller and Widenhoefer again attended, this time asking for Fulkerson to work at the school five days per week. Widenhoefer told the Council that the school had come up with $3,600 on their own and that the Churubusco Rotary and others had donated another $3,600 to be used for Fulkerson’s replacement.
Council President Frank Kessler told Miller and Widenhoefer that $7,200 wasn’t enough to pay for a replacement five days per week and suggested that Fulkerson could be utilized by the school three days per week until the end of the school year.
The town will continue funding Fulkerson for one day and the $7,200 will be used for his replacement two days per week.
Widenhoefer thanked the Council for their involvement and said he was thankful for the three days. He also said that Fulkerson could leave the school anytime if he was needed in town situations.
Council member Mark Pepple made the motion to accept the proposal and member Alan Malcolm seconded. The vote was 3-0 in favor.
The school will give a written report to the Council about how their program is progressing at the end of the school year.
The next regular scheduled Council meeting is on Wednesday, February 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Hall.
