If your valentine is the outdoor type, he or she will enjoy this couple’s hike more than another bottle of cologne. Go to Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College, Saturday, February 11, from 4-6:30 p.m. for a valentine hike. The group will meet at the Farmstead Barn site.
What is there to see on a winter hike? The landscape may appear dead in February, but underneath that winter monotony, signs of life are all around. Buds are preparing for a warm spell, chickadees are beginning to alter their calls and for squirrels and great horned owls, it’s mating season.
Some other species aren’t mating, but are surviving the cold weather by snuggling. Others are leaving intriguing tracks in the snow. If all else fails, they’ve put in an order for a lovely sunset.
After a trailside photo opportunity (they will take a photo of each couple and email them) and then return to the Farmstead Barn for a candlelit soup supper and “Hearty” dessert.
The hike will be over mowed trails with minimal hills, but some spots could be wet or slippery. Dress warmly. Boots are a good idea.
