One Year Ago
C & A Tool began installing a new milling machine. The multi-million dollar machine, one of five in the United States, would take a month to assemble.
Tommy Beezley II was leading in points at the Butler Motor speedway in Quincy, Michigan and sixth in points at Gas City.
Local fisherman, John Grimm competed in the National Amateur Bass Fishing Tournament in Escanaba, Michigan. He was second on the Indiana State Team and 20th overall and an alternate for BASS Federation National Championship in Tavares, Florida.

The Town Picnic in the Park was a huge success.  Attendance surpassed 500 coming to enjoy the annual event.
A baby wildebeest was born at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo.
Huntington College officially re-opened as Huntington University.
Josh and Jenifer Erwin announced the birth if their daughter, Ashlyn Rose.
Damon and Melinda Emgenbroich announced the birth of their daughter, Allison Grace.
Ten Years Ago
S-G Community Schools was one of 196 Indiana Schools selected to receive a Safe Haven school grant of $6,048.
The Noble County Fire Department won the Best of Show award at the Fire Truck & Equipment Show.
After several months of volunteer labor and work, the Habitat for Humanity home was complete. The new home owner, Gary Bingham and  his children received the house in an official dedication.

Dr. David Willyard began his general practice in Churubusco.
Charles Harker announced he would be a candidate for County Commissioner.
Grabill County Fair celebrated its 13th year. Crowd estimates the first year was 10,000. The past year over 30,000 visited the fair.
The post office was taking applications for clerk-carriers. Starting salary was $9.48 per hour.
50 Years Ago
The Churubusco School Band performed at the State Fair placing 20th in a field of 83. Director J. Tide Cook said the band had 70 members including the twirlers.
A grand jury investigation was called in the death of Gary Wade. Wade was killed in an accident on Anderson Road.
A crew from the Good and Good Drilling Contractors were drilling for oil on a farm on Butt Road near Lake Everett.
Members of the Ideal Fish and Game Club were furnished by the state conservation department with  about 250 ring-neck pheasants. The stipulation was they be turned loose in an area where water and feed were available.
There was an open house at Gold Medallion total electric model home.
Churubusco’s proposed golf course that was to open the next year had been dropped due to conflicting interest on the part of developer Harold McCoy.
Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Martin announced the birth of their daughter, Kathy Lynne.

One Year Ago
The Smith-Green Community School Board voted unanimously to appoint Richard Trump to fill the vacated Board seat. The Board also voted to hire a new school psychologist.  Jayne Evens would fill the vacant school psychologist position.
Counterfeit ten dollar bills were surfacing in Churubusco. The Secret Service was investigating a counterfeit ring operating in Noble, Whitley and Allen counties. The FBI was looking for the people printing the bills, not passing them.
After the Council passed Ordinance 2009-10 to approve $5,000 in appropriations for the walking and exercise trails in Churubusco, the Town Council members discussed rules for the use of the trails. The rules would be posted on signs along the paths.
Greg and Jeanine Childs celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.
Matt and Angela Blair announced the birth of their son, Brandt Krawczyk.
Five Years Ago
A celebration was held honoring Ann Davis’ retirement. She had worked 45 years as a waitress. She worked at the Green Grill and Turtle Town Inn which later became Lucky Lady.
A plan for sewer system expansion including the Waste Water Treatment Facility, was presented to the Town Council. The plan included a Community Focus Fund Grand request for $500,000 to defray part of the $1,325,000 cost of the project. Competition for the grant was high with 107 other towns applying for a maximum of $500,000 each. The Council planned on knowing if they received the grant by mid November.
The Whitley County Board of Commissioners wanted to know which time zone was preferred. Information would be forwarded to lobbying organizations.
Construction had begun on new restroom facilities at Diamond Two in Busco Park. Precision Sharpening donated the use of the big equipment.
Bill Claxton carved and donated a wooden sculpture of a coach, boy and girl to the Churubusco Park. ABC Tree and Landscaping also donated their services.

Whitley County EMS brought home the Governor’s Cup after winning the emergency response competition. Four out of the past five years, the team had come from Whitley County.
Jennifer Lynn Gross was crowned 2000 Miss Limberlost.
The body of Donald Sundheimer, Warsaw, was found in a corn field north of Churubusco. A Pierceton couple, Eugene Nowak and Stephanie Smith were arrested in connection with Sundheimer’s disappearance and murder.
Enrollment was up at Smith-Green Schools.

U.S. Senator Dan Quayle, facing re-election, held a town meeting in Auburn.
Community Action of Indiana had 186,000 pounds of cheese and other commodities to distribute to eligible families.
Tom Beezley and Terry Hull won the modified and street stock track championship at Avilla Motor Speedway.
Agape Church of the Brethren installed its first full-time pastor. Reverend John Glick of Council Bluffs, Iowa was installed by the Northern Indiana District Executive, Reverend Charles Bieber.
Herschel and Ruth Arrowsmith celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Wayne and DeLoris Biberstein celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Becky and Stephen Woenker announced the birth of their daughter, Amber Nicole.
Michael and Georgia Stahlhut announced the birth of the daughter, Sarah Michelle.

Total enrollment in Churubusco’s schools rose to 899, compared to 680 in 1950.
A 6800 mile communications network was ready to speed customer orders and other messages for J.I. Case. The teletyperwriter service “tailor made” by Bell Systems linked the Churubusco plant to headquarters in Racine, WI, and eight plants and 28 branches in 23 states and Canada.
Elementary School Township Trustee Walter Gordon announced an expansion of a four room addition. This was part of an eight room section of the original master plan.
Bids were being received for the expansion and remodeling of Whitley County Hospital. A sale of $300,000 bond issue for financing the project took place.

Ann Creech was the lucky winner of one of ten $500 Meijer gift cards. The American Red Cross and Meijers partnered to award a $500 card to one lucky blood donor in the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region. Ann has  donated blood for 27 years.
Cleary, a nationwide leader in manufacturing, delivery and construction of post-frame buildings, announced the sale of its 78,000th building.
The H1N1 influenza virus was still circulating in Indiana and preventative steps were still being encouraged by State Health Commissioner Judy Monroe, M.D.
David and Ruth Ann Figgins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a dessert reception hosted by their children.
Nathan and Melanie Killworth celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

As the new school year began, the Director of Curriculum, Dr. Brad Yoder resigned.
A groundbreaking for an expansion of the Church of the Nazarene was held.
Jason Geiger had the opportunity to meet with Senator Dick Lugar in Washington D.C.  Jason visited Washington on behalf of the World War II Victory Museum.
Donald and Beverly Woll celebrated their 50th anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.

John Davis was appointed principal of Churubusco Middle School replacing Ed Yoder.
The newest member of the Churubusco Chamber was Steve Baker, Director of Oak Pointe Senior Living Community.
Kenny Felger, long-time resident of Churubusco, celebrated his 90th birthday with family.
Ron Smith, long-time member of the Churubusco Rotary, was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. The award is bestowed on those who make a significant contribution to the Rotary Club.
Joel and Carrie McClure announced the birth of their daughter, Madelyn Nicole.
Steven and Kimberly Clouse announced the birth of their son, Nathan Thomas.

After 90 days of operation, BRC was running full steam ahead, operating all three shifts.
Hitler’s limousine was going to be one of the highlights at the Kruse Labor Day Auction.
Bob Klitzman was named Director of Curriculum and Transportation for S-G schools as well as assistant principal in the elementary school.
Tom Beezley, the current modified point leader, won his 10th modified feature of the year at Avilla Motor Speedway.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rushton announced the birth of their daughter, Meghan Elisabeth.
Jerry and Denise Renkenberger announced the birth of their son, Benjamin Hilton.
Mr. and Mrs. Delvin Barnes announced the birth of their son, Christopher.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Ramsey announced the birth of their daughter, Alicia Ann.

Churubusco realized between $1,500 and $2,000 profit in its 1960 Turtle Days celebration.
The 1950 graduating class of CHS held its 10th reunion at the Hobby Ranch House in Fort Wayne.
Whitley County residents purchased only a little more than half the amount of U.S. Savings Bonds in July that they purchased in July of 1959.
Janet Schermerhorn was named Queen of the Noble County 4-H Fair.
Rates increased at Whitley County Hospital.  Rates for a semi-private room went from $10 to $12 and for a private room from $14 to $17.
Specials at Shelton’s IGA were Baby Swiss Cheese, 59¢ pound, sliced bacon, 45¢ pound and 25 pounds of flour for $1.69.
Mr. and Mrs. Buford Ebert announced the birth of their son, Miles Anthony.

At the Town Council meeting, John Barrett was sworn in as a replacement for Chuck Mathieu who had resigned.
Michael Shanabarger was chosen as the delegate for Hoosier Boys State. The Churubusco American Legion Post sponsors two delegates each year for Girls & Boys State.
Fox Tires & More was Churubusco’s newest business.

Wow was celebrated at Morsches Park.
Tommy Beezley II won his first dirt track feature at Gas City Speedway. He also won his heat race and was only 34 points out of first place in overall points.

Churubusco Middle School Principal, Ed Yoder resigned to accept an administrative position at New Haven High School.
A strong storm with 60 mph and higher winds hit the area causing damage and power outages.
Rebecca Mark was named Director of Whitley Memorial Hospital Foundation.
The Churubusco Library was working on a beautification project. Landscaping, planting a lawn, an area for a flag pole and a parking lot were some of the improvements. The parking rule concerning non-authorized library vehicles would be strictly enforced.
Carrie and Jason Bolinger announced the birth of their daughter, Elizabeth Annette.
Brian and Lisa Alspach announced the birth of their daughter, Noel Betty.

David Hall, M.D., purchased the practice of Dr. James Roth, located at the Wolf Lake Medical Clinic. Dr. Hall continued general family practice.
A teladvisory service providing information on statewide weather patterns, agronomic factors and pest problems was being offered by Purdue University. The information was available 24/7 and toll free after 5 p.m. and before 8 a.m.
At the school board meeting, a recommendation was made that $1,000 be allocated for a time and feasibility study on the proposed computerization of the Central Office bookkeeping functions.

Churubusco Schools announced that school would begin on August 30.
Karen Barnes’ hereford was named Grand Champion at the Whitley County 4-H Fair.
Max McCormick resigned from the Busco Police force to go into business for himself.
The X-ray unit was at Raypole Service Station offering free chest x-rays. It was sponsored by the Whitley County Tuberculosis Association.
At the Columbia Theater, the original Three Stooges were starring in “Stop, Look and Laugh.”
Pat Boone, The Lennon Sisters and Tennessee Ernie Ford were some of the stars appearing at the Indiana State Fair.

State Senator Gary Dillon announced he would not run for re-election in 2010.
C & Tool Engineering announced that they were expanding production capabilities. They also received their ISO medial certification in addition to having ISO International standards certification, AS Aerospace certification and ISO/TS Automotive certification.
Smith-Green School Board member Steve Edwards turned in his resignation due to scheduling conflicts.
Matthew and Amber Pater announced the birth of their son, Kyler Jamisen.
Five Years Ago
Vandals struck in Green Township damaging numerous mail boxes.
The Indiana BMV was moving forward with plans to open one or two new mail processing centers and was seeking possible offers from communities statewide in an effort to streamline the agency.
Senator Bayh joined a bi-partision group of senators, including Senator Lugar, to urge the FCC to protect Indiana’s successful “Do Not Call” law from attempts to weaken it by pre-empting its protection with a weaker federal law.
Senator Lugar announced the Hoosier Heartland Highway would receive $4 million as part of the highway bill passed by the House of Representatives.

Whitley County Community Foundation announced a $75,000 gift to the Whitley County Humane Society to be used toward the construction of an animal shelter.
Pamela Thompson was named Whitley County Coordinator of First Steps/Step Ahead.
A squirrel caused a town wide power outage.
Jeff and Tina Gill announced the birth of their son, Jeffrey Tanner.
25 Years Ago
A public hearing was scheduled for a utility rate increase. The proposed increase was 40%. The hearing was scheduled for September 5 in Indianapolis.
Phil Dooley was considered an unsung hero. While driving to work one morning, he saw smoke and flames leaping from an attic area and around the eaves of a house. He and another gentleman stopped at the same time and went to the house. The front door was wide open with a little girl standing there. The mother was on the phone. Phil took the little girl and a couple of cats and the other gentleman assisted the lady out of the burning structure. The whole incident lasted maybe  five minutes and Phil was back in his car heading for work.
Good News Baptist Church announced they would be fully licensed by the State of Indiana to operate a Day Care Center.
Mr. and Mrs. David Lewis announced the birth of their daughter, Amanda Carol.
Mr. and Mrs. Rich Williamson announced the birth of their son, Rickie Lee.
James and Beverly Troyer announced the birth of their daughter, Amy Amanda.

Local 4-H’ers prepared for the 4-H fair that began on August 16.
The new roadway which was the main entrance to Karen Kove at Tri-Lakes was complete.
Ronnie Hile received the highest honors at Tri-Lakes Racing Association as he finished ahead of the field in the first heat.
Whitley REMC entered a petition for the construction of a new sub-station in
Allen County.
Jerome Krider was named Chairman of the 1960 Community Chest Drive.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Favinger celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
McClain & Aumsbaugh advertised a Tex-foam mattress set, double bed size for $129.95.
Hans Christian Andersen’s the “Snow Queen” was playing at the Columbia Theater.
