In the year 2000 everyone was worried about Y2K, this season the Northeast Corner Conference Coaches are wondering “Why 2 Kyles?” Churubusco’s Kyle Mathewson and Kyle Monk are wrecking havoc on teams early this season. Mathewson collected four touchdowns (two rushing and two receiving) Friday night against Central Noble, as the Eagles defeated the Cougars 44-7. Monk accounted for four touchdowns by himself, throwing for two and running for two more.
After holding Central Noble on their first series, to three plays and a punt, the Eagles again scored on their first offensive play this week as Monk ran 17 yards on a quarterback keeper. The point after was good by Parker Conrad to give the Eagles an early seven to nothing lead. The score was set up by a 43-yard punt return by Layne Fulk, who returned a punt for a touchdown last week. The hard-hitting Churubusco defense again held the Cougars, forcing them to punt on fourth down and 18 yards to go. Mathewson ran for his first touchdown, 62 yards to paydirt on the Eagles’ third play of the series, for a 13-0 Churubusco lead. Central Noble’s offense was stalled, collecting just three first downs through the first three quarters, as the Eagle defense played outstanding. The Churubusco defense was in the Central Noble backfield the whole game. Monk hit Mathewson with a 20-yard pass to close out the scoring in the first quarter, giving the Eagles a 19-0 lead. The second quarter scoring was just like the first -- Mathewson 46 yard run, Monk 42 yard run and Monk finished with a 14-yard pass to Mathewson giving Churubusco a 38-0 halftime advantage. Mathewson’s touchdown run looked like he was stopped at the line of scrimmage, but he bounced it to the outside and dashed down the sidelines for six. Monk rolled left and found a crease in the Cougar defense and darted to the end zone on his score. On the ensuing kickoff, Central Noble fumbled the kick and never gained control as Fulk jumped on it at the Cougar nine-yard line. After a delay of game penalty with the ball moved back to the 14 yard line, Monk dropped back and had a Cougar defender hanging on as he connected with Mathewson for their second touchdown pass play of the night.
“I think we got better on our offensive line tonight,” said Coach Lee Etzler. “Zack Armstead had quite a few good plays tonight at the guard position. Brian Richardson and Zack Adams are getting better as the season progresses.”
The third period the Eagles continued to move the ball with ease as Jason Nicodemus returned the kickoff 19 yards. On the first play LeFever ran for 18 yards and then Jes Percey for 17 more, and with 10:27 left in the third quarter the Eagles scored their last points as LeFever outran the Cougar defense on a 15-yard run, 44-0 Eagles. The Eagle defense stiffened after giving up a first down on the Cougars next series. On first down Fulk knocked the ball away from Tyler Skinner. The Cougars retained possession as Skinner fell on the ball for an 18-yard loss. A short gain by the Cougars and then Justin Turnbow threw the center aside and pounced on Cochran for a three-yard loss.
“When it is early in the season and you’re winning, your focus needs to be on improving yourself,” explains Coach Etzler. “I feel that we are improving each week. Are we where we want to be? Not yet, we need to keep pushing ourselves and stay focused on our goals.”
The Eagles went to their bench for the remainder of the game. Jay Petrie completed two of three passes and freshman quarterback Hayden Kilgore directed the young Eagles down the field when he entered the game. Several Churubusco running backs had big runs for the Eagles, including Kane Johnson’s 29-yard run. Jason Nicodemus ran four times for 36 yards. Cody Conwell broke one for 14 yards, Luke McParlan had two carries for 13 yards and Braydon Shively carried once for nine yards.
The Eagles will host Prairie Heights this Friday at 7:30 p.m. Come on back to the game and check out the exciting Eagle football team.

With better passing it made for better sets and that lead to kills. “We actually had good legitimate kills tonight,” explained Coach Goings.
The Lady Eagles got solid middle back play with sophomores Gabby Jones and Emma Frericks. They also ran their quick offense with powerhouse Heather Monk. “We were more visual in front row tonight,” said Coach Goings. “We got great leadership out of Ashlie Shelton and Heather Monk tonight,” stated Coach Goings.

The Churubusco Eagles opened their 2010 season with an explosive 46-0 win over Fremont. It was the Eagles’ sixth straight season to win their opening game.
“We worked on things we needed to get better on tonight,” explained Coach Lee Etzler. “We rotated kids around to establish a little more depth that we will need if we are going to survive a long football season. We want to be comfortable throwing the ball. We want to be comfortable with some of those kids at those positions.”
After an opening onside kick that Fremont recovered, it was all Churubusco from then on. The first play from scrimmage Kyle Monk handed the ball off to Jes Percey, who gave it to Josh Lefever on the reverse. LeFever ran down the visitors’ sidelines to midfield where he pitched the ball back to Monk who was following the play. Monk had clear running to the end zone, 6-0 Eagles.
Another three and out by Fremont, gave the Eagles the ball at the Fremont 47 yard line. Kyle Mathewson ran right for 11 yards, then left for five more and then plowed through the Fremont defense for 14 more yards down to the 20-yard line. Monk dropped back and hit Mathewson at the ten where Mathewson hauled it in and went for the end zone. On the next offensive series LeFever ran left side for 28 yards and on the next play Alex Zolman connected Mathewson in the flats and Kyle took it to the end zone for a 20-0 Churubusco lead. The Eagles closed out the scoring in the first quarter with a 51-yard punt return by Layne Fulk. Fulk went back for the ball and then picked up his blockers and scampered down the home sidelines.
The Eagle defense was very stingy allowing Fremont just one first down for the game, with that coming in the fourth quarter. Fremont ball carries were a little timid after getting pounded by the Eagles’ defensive players. Fremont managed just ten yards on 28 carries and were 0 for 13 passing.
“Defense played real well. They (Fremont) struggled to do anything on offense,”stated Coach Etzler. “The thing we are most proud of is that we hit. It influences the game so much when you hit like that. Hopefully we can do that against future opponents and take the will out of their game.”
Churubusco added one more touchdown in the second quarter, an eight-yard pass from Monk to Spencer Conrad for a 32-0 halftime lead.
On the second play of the third quarter for the Eagles Monk pitched left to Mathewson who went 51 yards to paydirt for Mathewson’s third touchdown on the night. Jes Percey scored the Eagles’ last touchdown of the night on a four yard run, giving the Eagles a 46-0 lead with just under four minutes left in the third quarter.
By now the Eagle starters were getting a well-deserved rest as the underclassmen got their chance to show the coaches what they could do. The reserve players did their job preserving the shutout and making some big plays as well. Jesse Green got to the punter for a block in the fourth quarter. The Eagles had pressure on Fremont’s punter all night. Several times they almost got a hand on the ball.
“The freshman kids are extremely athletic and we are really excited about how they are developing,” added Coach Etzler. “Those kids could be outstanding and there are a lot of them that could be really good.”
The Eagles will be on the road this week at rival Central Noble, game time is 7:30.

The Lady eagles Volleyball team opened the season this past week with a pair of losses. Dropping the match to Leo 25-11, 25-10 and 25-17 in three sets. Then on Thursday they lost to Garrett 25-13, 25-12 and 25-22 in three sets.
Opening night the Lady Lions came to Churubusco and outplayed the younger Lady Eagles. The Eagles have just two seniors on the squad this year but feel that they will get stronger throughout the season. The Eagles took a 4-2 lead early in the first set, but Leo came back full throttle to take a 15-6 lead enroute to a 25-11 victory for the Lions. In the second set Leo jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Eagles fought back trimming the Lions lead 12-8 before Leo went on an 11 point run to put the set away 25-10. Leo stormed out to a 16-5 lead in the third set. But the Lady Eagles would not give up as they cut the Lions lead to just five at 22-17 before the Lady Lions put the Eagles away 25-17 to win the match. “Right now it’s not about wins and losses it’s about getting better,” stated Coach Trinda Goings. “And we felt that we definitely got better throughout the night.”

At Garrett on Thursday the Railroaders took the first two sets 25-13 and 25-12 with little resistance from the lady Eagles.
“We put in a six-two offense tonight for the first time,” explained Coach Goings. “What that means is that we only set from the back row, we had two setters whenever the setter is in the back row she will come forward to set, that is the six-two offense.”
But in the third set the Lady Eagles came to life. They had a 19-13 lead before went on a 7-0 run. The Eagles took the lead again then Garrett tied the score up at 22 all and took the next three points for the win 25-22.
“In the third set we talked to the girls and told them that they needed to go after the ball, want the ball and play confident,” explained Coach Goings. “I call where they’re supposed to serve. So we went with serves to the middle just to keep the ball in play and they served more confident.”
