Whitley County sent 18 4-H members as delegates to Purdue University for training in their Science Workshop classes. The workshop was June 9-11. Brian Rock was the keynote speaker – Purdue’s Wide Receivers Coach. The delegates were competing in “Barnyard Olympics” with Dr. Rod Allrich. Each delegate attended specific Species Workshop sessions to learn knowledge about their area of interest. The Purdue Workshop objectives are listed as following:
* To develop and foster life skills through positive interaction with others.
* To teach scientific principles of Animal Sciences to young people.
* To increase awareness of animal industry issues among youth.
* To inform participants about careers in animal agriculture and educational opportunities at Purdue.
* To prepare delegates to teach the information that was taught to them by Purdue faculty and staff, to others in their local communities.
Delegates represented the following projects from Whitley County: Beef -Jordan Gilbert, Tyler Sheets and Blake Reust, Dog- Brittany Wilcox, Floriculture – Becca Miller, Goat – Skylar Campbell, Horse & Pony – Kennedy St George, Lauren Shively, Rabbit – Rachel Atkins, Haylee Gardner, Olivia Western, Brittney Yagel, Sheep – Katie Barnett, Elizabeth Fleming, Christena Hoopingarner, Vet Science – Sam Eberly, Holly Kyler and Jacquelyn St George. The 4-H Clubs Inc. helps sponsor Whitley County delegates for the Purdue Science Workshops.
