CHS students and New Era members Caitie Eakins, Alana Miller, Cassandra Petrie and Brandon Green received gold ratings for their vocal solos at the State Finals.

A snow emergency was in effect for two days as high winds kept snow on the move.
Due to the growth of 4-H members in Smith Township, it was decided to add a third 4-H club. The new club was the Harvesters.
Cadet Girl Scouts from Troop 850 went to Portage, Michigan to the Air Zoo. A highlight to the day was operating a flight simulator. They had guided tours and learned about planes used in previous wars and past and current technology.
Gretchen Meinzen, CMS, won the Whitley County Spelling Bee and would represent the County at the Regional Spelling Bee.
Bill and Phyllis Burnworth celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with a family celebration.
Jeremy and Erin Wirges announced the birth of their daughter, Adelyn Rae.
Joshua and Kelli Kirchner announced the birth of their son, Austin James.
Ten Years Ago
Kelly Herron was named 2002 recipient of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, a four year full ride to the Indiana university or college of her choice.
Police were called to CHS after students overheard threatening remarks about returning to school with guns. The lockers and homes of the two were searched with nothing found to substantiate the threats.
Vandals, armed with yellow spray paint, wrote on the high school marquee and also damaged the ornamental turtle at the north entrance to the park.
Grannie’s Café was open in the Turtle Town Plaza. They were open 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with home cooked breakfast and lunch.
The Smith-Green Board of School Trustees voted unanimously to hire Lee Etzler as the head football coach.
Bob Egolf of Egolf’s IGA donated gift certificates to the Wolf Lake Lion’s Club to help kick-off the benefit for Shane Brumbaugh who had been diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis.

In an effort to build circulation and continue its role as a community-minded newspaper, the Tri –County Truth acquired the services of a Chicago based circulation company to carry out a two month promotional project.
Native of Churubusco, Kathy Kirtley Aldridge, was named one of 50 teachers in the United States to participate in a special national program in citizenship education.
The children of Leo and Verda Ebert hosted an open house observing their 50th wedding anniversary.
Dallas and Nancy Nestel announced the birth of their daughter, Alyssa Nicole.
Scott and Kim Maloney announced the birth of their daughter, Sarah Lynn.
“Crocodile Dundee” was showing at the Silver Screen Theater in Garrett.

The Town Board was seeking a replacement for Board President Ben Brown, who had resigned. His resignation left the board temporarily with two members, Ralph Longsworth and Wilbur Gaff.
For the third consecutive year, the Angola Hornets had ousted the Churubusco Eagles from sectional tournament play. The score was 72-63.
David Clouse, CHS senior, was selected as winner of the 1962 Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award. He received a bronze medal.
The northeast precinct of Smith Township was divided into two separate precincts. The Churubusco area retained the Northeast Smith while Blue Lake became Northwest Smith.
Don Mayberry was among the players in the 80 member Ball State Teachers College varsity band. Thirty high schools from the area counties, including Whitley were invited as special guests.
