One Year Ago
Churubusco High School Athletic Director Lee Etzler announced he would be stepping down as Athletic Director at the end of the school year. He would stay on to coach football and teach.
The School Board approved the purchase of nine laptops, support equipment, software and a five year warranty. They would be used to replace staff computers. The ones being replaced would be used by the school board during their meetings. The price was $15,705.
The IHSAA released the latest reclassification for the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 football teams in Indiana. Churubusco returned to the 2A class. The Eagles were the second biggest school in Class A for the last four seasons. Enrollment figures went up four students and that was enough to move them up. Central Noble dropped to Class A, the result of enrollment dropping from 486 to 416.
Richard and Sue Hamilton, together with their children, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Troy and Kristen Holzinger announced the birth of their son, Ryker Allen.
Five Years Ago
Area residents were being warned of a phone scam appearing to come from National City Bank, asking for sensitive, personal information. Local branch manager Greg Haney said they would never call for this information, to end the call and let them know.
Winter had arrived in Churubusco with single digit temperatures.
Six local firemen were honored at a luncheon in Fort Wayne by the Anthony Halberstadt Chapter, National Society Sons of the American Revolution for their bravery and heroism at an accident that claimed two lives and injured others. Certificates of Heroism were awarded to Tadd Shively. Jim Horne, Ron Slagal, Chris Tomlinson and Matt Straub. A Heroism Medal and Certificate was awarded to Smith Township Fire Chief and Commander on the Scene, Kris Bair.
The Shepherd’s Hand Medical Clinic announced it would close permanently on February 28.
Ruth Arrowsmith retired after 24 years of service at Jones Insurance.
Aaron and Jennifer Edwards announced the birth of their daughter, Ella Caroline.
Ten Years Ago
An ice storm swept through Northern Indiana, crippling much of the area with downed trees and power lines. AEP reported 20,000 were without power. Some were out for hours and some for days.
Community members, coaches and athletes came to hear the Smith-Green Board of Trustees discuss the merits of changing athletic conferences. It was to be voted on in March.
Board Members approved contracts for asbestos removal in the elementary classrooms being renovated. Eight classrooms were affected when carpet was removed.
Andrea Elliott, Emily Plasterer and Trisha McDowell received firsts on their solos at the ISSMA music contest and were heading on to the State ISSMA contest.
The Hoosier State Press Association elected new officers for 2002 of which Robert Allman was named Vice President.
Brian and Janet Lehmkuhl announced the birth of their son, Joseph Boyce.
25 Years Ago
A new labor agreement was ratified by 83 percent between the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers AFL-CIO Local 2034 and Dana Corporation.
Churubusco wrestler Carey Maierle won the sectional championship in the 185 pound division. Dennis Allman placed second in the 155 pound class. Both advanced to Regional competition.
Community Action of Northeast Indiana, Inc. distributed cheese, butter, honey and rice at the Boy Scout Lodge.
CHS Student Tim Johnson won a $200 U.S. Savings Bond. Students were to answer two questions, “How is the Constitution important to life in the United States?” and “What do you think life in the United States would be like without the Constitution?” Entries were to be 50 words or less and were judged on knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, creativity, originality and neatness.
Guy and Sheila Roberson announced the birth of their daughter, Kelli Kristine.
50 Years Ago
In a phone call to the Tri-County Truth, George Victor, President of Victor Manufacturing and Gasket Company, announced his firm had purchased the former J.I. Case Plant. They planned to be operating by the end of the year.
The Albion Board of Trustees issued a franchise for natural gas service for the Albion community.
Several CHS students received superior ratings at the District Band, Orchestra and Vocal Contest. They were Juanita McEowen, Jeanne Gross, Sharon Sheldon, Kathy Kirtley, Bob Sloffer, Drex Bricker, Ron Johnson, Larry LaRue, Stuart Smith and Willis Johnson.
Churubusco native Dr. Bruce Benward wrote a textbook, a complete dictation course for college freshman music theory students. It was in its second printing. He had been called the most wealthy music theorist in the United States.
