Smith-Green Community School Board voted to change the meeting start time from 7 to 6:30 p.m. They hoped an earlier start time would bring more community members to regular board meetings.
Chris Meyers was hired as Whitley County’s newest juvenile probation officer.
Former CHS student and athlete, Richelle Ranney, received a full four year scholarship to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Richelle was also named All-Conference, All State and voted MVP for volleyball at Palmira High School in Eagle, Wisconsin.
Wes Gardner was the winner of the “Beat Big Daddy” contest for the 2010 season. He won a 32” TV for his 164 correct picks.
Leonard and Helen McKinney celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Charles Geiger celebrated his 80th birthday with an open house in his honor.
Five Years Ago
St. Francis students and Churubusco graduates Tara Dice and Dusty Beucler were featured on the University of St. Francis marketing material for the women’s and men’s basketball teams.
Churubusco residents Don Amber, Smith Township Trustee and John Barrett, County Council District 1, were sworn in by Judge Heuer at the Whitley County Courthouse.
Governor Mitch Daniels renewed the Mitch’s Kids Program for another year.  In 11 months, 4,500 at-risk Hoosier children received homework assistance and tutoring in reading and math.
Support Our Troops license plates made its statewide debut. Proceeds generated from the sale of the plate would be placed into a fund supporting Indiana National Guard and Reservist families.
Ten Years Ago
Winner of the Churubusco News annual lighting contest were named. First place went to Pricilla Andrews, second place winner was the Ken and Kandy Bohde family. Third place went to Wayne Krider.
Gregory Childs, owner and director of Sheets Funeral Home, announced the long established and respected funeral firm would be known as Sheets & Childs Funeral Home.
The Churubusco Town Council approved the authorization to borrow funds to purchase a police car through Farmers & Merchants Bank.
25 Years Ago
Dr. Roger Thornton announced his resignation as superintendent of Smith-Green Community Schools. He replaced Kenneth Webster as superintendent of the Wawasee Community School Corporation.
Churubusco American Legion presented a $300 check to Mike and Bonnie Hazen for the Christmas Bureau.
The final block of land to complete the Merry Lea Environmental Center was transferred from the Nature Conservancy to Goshen College. The college operated Merry Lea, providing educational programs for schools and recreational activities.
The State’s Natural Resources Commission approved a fee increase for gate entrance and other services. Daily entrance fees increased from $1.50 to $2.00. The annual permit went from $15 to $18.

The Churubusco Town Board reminded residents the Town garbage pick-up had begun.
The first “kill” of rats at the town dump was scheduled. Arab Pest Control would perform the service. A second “kill” would follow in the spring.
Marion Mayberry received notice of certification of his appointment as Churubusco Justice of the Peace.
Sam Good, Marion businessman, was indicted for the alleged embezzlement of $192,000, belonging to the Royal American Life Insurance Company, of which he was once president.
Churubusco area farmer Frank Flowers announced the opening of his new real estate office.
Birth announcements this week were Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Lee Smith, a son, David Lee; Mr. and Mrs. John Powell, a daughter, Mary Iva; Mr. and Mrs. Dan Nestel, a daughter, Darci Lee; Mr. and Mrs. John Bockelman, a son, David Franklin and Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Gillum, a daughter, Sherri Kay.
