One Year Ago
The first annual Churubusco Car and Truck Show was a great success.  Some of the money raised, was given to the Churubusco United Methodist Food Bank. The $1,000 donation helped purchase more items for distribution.
Ten teachers and administrators from Smith-Green attended the International Society for Technology in Education conference and exhibition in Philadelphia, PA. In the fall, all students 5 – 12 would use netbooks.
Churubusco students Devon Zeigler and Valerie Pope received History medals from the Colonel Augustin de la Balme Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Churubusco resident and Carroll High School graduate Lindsey Fingerle was selected to be an Indianapolis Colts cheer- leader. She was the youngest member of the cheerleading team.
Terry and Helen Clouse celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a renewal of their vows.
Five Years Ago
The building which housed Churubusco Woodworking caught fire and burned. Six fire departments responded to the blaze.
The former H & O Sports Shop located at the corner of Highway 33 and 550 East was demolished.
Tim McDowell won “The Grateful Shed Too” contest sponsored by Rock 104  Radio Station. The shed had a “Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz” theme.
John W. Lefever, President/CEO of Star Insurance Agency, announced that Jones Insurance Agency-EGL Insurance, was now Star Insurance.
Corey Richards was selected by People-to-People Sports Ambassador Program to represent the United States in Amsterdam, Holland. Corey would wrestle on the United States wrestling team. The American Legion Post 157 presented him with a check for over $1,500 to help with expenses.
Inn and Margaret Bolen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends.

Kappa Delta Phi National Sorority held their 75th annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Doris Martin served as a delegate for the Gamma Alpha Eta Chapter. Her husband Bob accompanied her on the trip.
Busco Eagle Brad Dell,  honored by the News –Sentinel, was named to the All-Area Baseball team.
The Locobazooka Tour at Hilger’s Farm Market brought a crowd of 4,000 to hear the sounds of lots of bands.
The 2002 Berne Swiss Days Festival was the largest celebration in their history. This was to celebrate the 150th Swiss Days.
Weather related disasters in farm country were threatening farmers and ranchers. There were record droughts and floods. Farm Aid and other groups were teaming up to help family farmers survive.
Michael and Abby Richards announced the birth of their son, Gabriel Robert.

The Turtle 10,000 Race had 185 participants.
Churubusco United Methodist Church welcomed new pastor Walter Kilburn and his wife, Melba, to Churubusco from Kokomo. Reverend Kilburn replaced Reverend E. Vaughn Powell, who became pastor of First United Methodist Church in LaGrange.
Tina Huffman was the lucky winner of the new Ford truck from Floyd’s Auto Sales.
“Happy the Hobo” was in the Turtle Days Parade, passing out booklets to all of his fans.
Bruce and Janet Wright announced the birth of their son, John Allen.
Mr. and Mrs. Perry Blessing announced the birth of their daughter, Mallory Lee.
50 Years Ago
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Watson purchased Brown’s Greenhouse.
Boy Scout Troop 81 was presented its charter.
Assets of the Churubusco State Bank reached an all-time high with $54,498,709.77. This total represented a gain of deposits of more than one quarter of a million dollars during the past year.
Whitley County’s 1963 license plates would begin with the prefix 92 instead of DB or DA. The two numbers indicated the county. Plates in Churubusco were numbered 92B.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cougell announced the birth of their daughter, Angela Lee.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Garwood, a girl, Cindy Lou.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shoda announced the birth of Eric Todd.
Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Bryant, a son, Jack Theodore.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley VanWert announced the birth of their daughter, Karen Ann.

One Year Ago
Johnny, from the Tin Caps, visited the Churubusco Public Library to help children achieve their summer reading goals.  Former CHS teacher, now an employee of the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, Janet Haney, brought critters of all kinds to the library to also encourage the reading program.
The Lucky Lady was having their Grand Opening Celebration in their newly remodeled building.
Colton Geiger, Churubusco FFA President, was elected to serve as Indiana’s FFA’s District III Reporter for 2011-12. Officers plan activities and put on programs within seven Northeastern Indiana counties.
Lester and Grace Keister celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

The Turtletown Players presented Celebrate America: a patriotic concert at the Churubusco United Methodist Church.
Bradley Vaught, CHS, was selected to participate in the 33rd Annual High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series in Huntington. Several members of the All-Star squads have been drafted by professional clubs and may receive college baseball scholarships.
Tommy Beezley II, was running third in points at Gas City and I-69 Speedway. He was defending his two-time championship at Gas City.
Hearing of the rezoning request of the Blue Lake Community Resort was scheduled for July 16.
Churubusco native Andrew Norris was picked by Indiana Senate leaders to serve as a new policy analyst for the Republican majority caucus.
Ten Years Ago
A faulty electrical wire was to blame for a fire that caused major damage to Deluxe Satellite Systems.
John Black was named new plant manager at Churubusco’s Dana Corporation. He replaced John Zale, who retired earlier in the year.
New postage rates were going into effect on June 30. The cost of mailing a first class letter went to 37 cents.
After sixteen years, Tim Wilkins stepped down as Busco Eagles track and cross-country coach. A replacement had not been named.
The Town was facing fines from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), for failing to file required reports as well as for discharges and overflows. The $14,500 fine could be reduced to $9,000.
Senator Harold “Potch” Wheeler was honored with the Public Policy Award for his efforts to advance the ability of people with mental handicaps.
Andy and Cindy Krider announced the birth of their son, Justin Andrew.
Trent and Lisa Shively announced the birth of their daughter, Claire Elisabeth.

Churubusco State Bank announced a change in board members with the resignation of Dr. Roger Thornton. The board appointed and approved John Ford.
The Town Board decided to hire McGuire and Sons Asphalting Company to repair and repave various streets in Churubusco.
Two new businesses opened their doors in Churubusco. Brad’s Pets Plus opened on West Washington Street. The shop was owned by Larry and Sue Brockhaus.
The This and That Shop owned by Bob and Michelle Tartaglia opened in the Century Mall. The couple had lost everything in their store in a fire earlier in the year. They started completely over again with a variety of goods.
Wilbur and Catherine Cramer celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lewis announced the birth of their daughter, Samantha Kay.
50 Years Ago
Whitley County ranked 87th among Indiana counties, in the percentage of registered voters, who cast ballots in the May Primary.
Half of the county bridges were said to be “totally inadequate” to serve local travel needs. This was reported by the highway engineer from Purdue.
Chairman of the Red Cross blood program warned that Whitley County could be dropped as a standing member of the Fort Wayne regional blood center unless donations picked up.
Boy Scout Troop 81 was presented its charter by Howard Wilson, representative for the Tomahawk District.
Mr. and Mrs. James Shelmadine announced the birth of their son, Scott.
Mr. and Mrs. Danny Smith announced the birth of their son, Bob Lee.
A son, Larry Allen, Jr. was born to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Trumbull.
Mr. and Mrs. Ervin German announced the birth of their son, Curtis Roy.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Harter announced the birth of their son, James Lee.

One Year Ago
The family of the late Jim Fry Sr. updated the memorial in his honor at the Churubusco Park. After donating money in Fry’s name for construction of the batting cage, the family constructed a memorial with a bench, plaque and landscaping. The family added stone and concrete to complete the memorial. Jim Fry Sr. actively volunteered at the park for over 40 years.
Christian Stoner and Brooke Carter each received their State FFA Degree at the 82nd State Convention. Typically less than two percent of Indiana FFA membership receives this, the highest degree awarded by the Indiana State FFA Association.
The Smith-Green School Board approved an Equipment Lease-Purchase Agreement for acquiring 800 Dell netbooks for grades 5-12.
The Churubusco Town Council agreed to go ahead with a new tax to help fund the fee to the Smith-Township Fire Department.  Smith Township also agreed with the tax. The estimated increase in town was .3 percent on a $100,000 home and 2.1 percent township increase per $100,000 home.
Matthew and Stephanie Morris announced the birth of their daughter, Edyn Kaylea.

Winners of the First Annual Horseshoe Tournament at Turtle Days were Darin Winget, first, Derek Fletcher, second and third place went to Bob Sade.
The Turtle Days Committee made a historic move and changed the parade route to accommodate traffic flow around town.
Nicole Singer, current vice principal for CES and CMS, became the elementary principal.
Class of 2007, Cornerstone Christian School had two graduates, Joy Lawrence and Eli Stangland.
Walter and Donna Roberson celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Francis and Janet Louise Bianski celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Johnnie and Donna Tom celebrated their 41st anniversary.

At the school board meeting, Jerry Lange was appointed athletic director and Kevin Kempton was appointed the new elementary school principal.
Storm clouds, pounding rain, thunder and lightning greeted the start of the Turtle Days Parade, but within ten minutes, the rain stopped and a double rainbow was on the horizon.
Local author M.L. Rigdon spoke and signed copies of her newly released book “Prophecy Denied” at the Million Story Book Company.
Gene and Martha Bohnstedt celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
A dual open house was held to honor Guy and June Wilson’s 50th wedding anniversary and their daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Rodney Steinagel on their 25th wedding anniversary.
25 Years Ago
Dr. Thomas Combs was hired as the new Superintendent of Smith-Green Schools.
Tri-County News Publisher Edward Dooley announced new roles at his company. Phil Dooley would be advertising manager and Ned Dooley would be the circulation manager.
Brooks Fetters returned to the area as pastor of Union Chapel United Brethren Church. He had worked at Orr Funeral Home in the past. He received his master of Christian Ministry degree and served in Toledo before this opportunity arose.
Turtle Days 1987 was dedicated to the memory of Gale Harris, who passed away in February. Harris’ farm was the spot of national attention during the search for Oscar.
50 Years Ago
Churubusco’s water supply was augmented with the completion of a new well. The new well had a capacity of 200 gallons per minute, free flow.
Fears that the LaOtto School might be abandoned were strengthened by a Purdue University group studying East Allen Schools.
Roofing material was being placed on the new addition of the Victor Gasket Plant.
Ila Kichler, one of the oldest graduates of CHS, was at the Alumni banquet. She graduated in 1901.
First prize float at the Alumni homecoming parade went to the graduating class of 1945. It represented “Education, the Key to Success,” the theme for the year.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Freeman announced the birth of their son, Charles Kenneth.
Mr. and Mrs. David Crooks announced the birth of their son, David LeRoy, Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Coy announced the birth of their daughter, Sally Jo.

Smith-Green Community Schools had 105 seniors graduating.
C & A Tool held its first Annual Charity Car Show with over 100 cars entered. The proceeds went to community food banks and scholarships at Churubusco High School.
Tommy Beezley II was racing at LimaLand Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio. Sanctioned by NASCAR in 2011, they were paying $6,000 to the winner of the final modified point standing. Because of all the rain, the first race wasn’t run until June 3, where Beezley ran seventh in the “A Main.” On June 10th, he won the “A Main Event.”
Orland and Judith Leitch celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.
Don and Peggy Dodson celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.
Five Years Ago
Arlene Shively and Sarah Gilbert were grand marshals for the 58th Annual Turtle Days Parade.
Ninety-year-old Ann Barrett created and donated a quilted wall hanging to the Luckey Hospital Museum at Wolf Lake. She used photos from the 1930’s as a guide. Ann even included an arrow sign pointing down SR 109 lettered “Bear Lake,” where she and her family lived.
Churubusco’s Fred “Ranson” Jones, University of Evansville senior, was selected in the 2007 Major League First-Year Player Draft. He yielded just 129 career base hits at Evansville and made history in his first season as a Purple Ace, as he tossed the first ever no-hitter. Jones was picked by the New York Yankees.
Kathy Shively, advanced EMT, serving Whitley County for 28 years, was presented the Jerome Wait, MD, EMS Award. This award went to someone who consistently exhibited devotion and sacrifice to the EMS profession.
Matthew and Angela Blair announced the birth of their daughter, Ava Elizabeth.
Ten Years Ago
Pam Hunsberger was fourth runner-up in the Miss National Pre-Teen Indiana 2002 Competition. Placing 4th among 95 other contestants, qualified her in the MS National Pre-Teen Princess Program held in Orlando, Florida in the fall.
A section of State Road 5 was officially dedicated to retiring State Senator Harold Wheeler. The segment of Whitley County highway called the Harold “Potch”Wheeler Highway, was from the southern edge of the county, near the intersection of SR 114 and 5, north to County Line Road.
The Churubusco Chamber was hosting “The Chamber After Five” event at Pro Systems. The event was open to the public.  Chamber members were providing appetizers, beverages and door prizes.
Indiana’s new area codes, 260 and 574, went into effect.
Richard and Dottie Carpenter observed their 50th wedding anniversary with a mass and reception.
Jason and Tiffany Trostel announced the birth of their son, Blake Duane.
Chad and Amy Jagger announced the birth of their son, Cameron Richard.

Robert Klitzman, acting superintendent of Smith-Green Community Schools, accepted a position as Superintendent of Eastern Pulaski Corporation in Winnamac.
Alan and Connie Osterland represented Indiana in the 1982 National Endowments Soil and Water Conservation Awards.
Sylvan Lake promised to be one of the area’s best fishing spots this summer.
David and Jane Lotter announced the birth of their daughter, Abby Marie.
Brad and Koreen Knapp announced the birth of their daughter, Whitney Ann.
Guy and Twila Whonsetler announced the birth of their son, Kyle Clayton.
William and JoAnn Diem announced the birth of their daughter, Taryn Ann.
Dean and Jodi Stangland announced the birth of their son, Craig Andrew.

Work had begun on the four classrooms being added to the existing Churubusco High School.
The proposed plan for reorganizing Whitley County Schools was to be heard in a public hearing the end of June.
Due to record enrollment, a second session of swim lessons was being added at Chain-O-Lakes Park.
Joe McGuire’s Best Buy of the Week was three acres, six room ranch house for $26,250.
Over 500 were expected at the Alumni banquet. The speaker for the evening was Chaplain Ted Voorhees, a 1912 Busco graduate.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Jones announced the birth of Kurt Allan.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Davis announced the birth of James Brian.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dove announced the birth of Barry Scott.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Coats announced the birth of Debra Renee.

One Year Ago
Churubusco’s living World War II Veterans were honored during the Whitley County D-Day commemoration. Those from Churubusco honored were Robert Boyer, Edwin Parker, Jr., Dale Zolman and Robert Zolman.
Cornerstone Christian School celebrated its 21st Graduation and Awards ceremony. Seniors were Eric Berning, Casie Busenbark and Jonathan Klein.
Franklin and Patricia Iddings celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.
Errik and Toni Polakovic announced the birth of their daughter, Skylie Louise.
Karrington Cameron’s birth to Nicole Pippenger and the late Cameron Amber  was announced.
Five Years Ago
The Churubusco High School Baseball team defeated the Jimtown Jimmies in the IHSAA Regional Championship. The next stop was Semi-State in West Lafayette.
Lt. Governor Becky Skillman awarded Whitley County a $525,000 Community Focus Fund Grant. The Grant was used for a senior center.
Erica Holloway, a 2007 CHS graduate, was among the 34 winners of the statewide hhgregg/Asaro 9/11Scholarships. The scholarship fund, created in 2002, was named in the memory of New York City firefighter Carl Asaro, who died in the collapse of World Trade Center 2, as he worked to rescue victims of the terrorist attacks.
Hilary Newman-Jacobs was Valedictorian and Jason Kimmel, Salutatorian for the Class of 2007.
Bill and Kelli Brenneke announced the birth of their son, Dakota Lester.
Wes and Kassie Sinclair announced the birth of their daughter, Brooklyn Madison.
Ten Years Ago
The Smith-Green Board of Trustees named David Martin superintendent to replace Bill Kirby. Kirby had accepted the superintendent position at Huntington.
CHS Class of 2002 graduated 116 students.
The United States Achievement Academy announced that Katy Woodruff of Churubusco was named a United States National Award Winner in mathematics.
Dustin Beucler competed at the IHSAA State Finals, participating in the high jump. He finished 15th in the State.
Roger Ranney was named the 2002 Turtle Days Festival Grand Marshal. A Churubusco native, he attended Churubusco schools though his junior year then moved to Florida. He earned his teaching degree from the University of Florida but was so busy with his acting career, he didn’t have time to pursue his teaching career. He appeared in many television shows including Sea Quest, NYPD Blue, West Wing and V.I.P.
Cindy Thies, retiring principal at CES, was taken for a surprise motorcycle ride the last day of school, fulfilling her remark to co-workers, that she might enjoy taking off on the back of a motorcycle. Her friends and retired teacher Loren Maierle made her wish come true.
Dean and Dianne Hille announced the birth of their son, Cameron Allen.

Tri-County Publishing owner Ed Dooley announced the sale of the Butler Printing Division to Grigori Loy.
Churubusco High School hired a new boys’ basketball coach, Dennis Hoff to replace Todd Howard, whose contract was not renewed.
Rose Harris gave the turtle in downtown Churubusco a new look with a fresh coat of paint.
Joe and Mildred Krider celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.
Charles and Jill Waltemath announced the birth of their son, Cody Allen.
50 Years Ago
Local teacher, Mrs. Pauline Clingerman ended her 32 year teaching career. She had taught the eighth grade since 1948.
Bob Amber was the new president of the Churubusco Methodist Men’s Club.
Floyd’s Auto Sales Ford Dealership received the Ford Division Distinguished Achievement Award and the Gold Car Leadership Award. The first award was for progressive management and high quality standards, the latter for an outstanding sales record for the year.
Jack Cochrane, a world- wide evangelist, spoke at the Calvary Baptist Church in observance of their first anniversary.
There were lots of birth announcements that week. Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Shoda announced the birth of their son, Brett Lee. Mr. and Mrs. Einer Jensen announced the birth of their son, William Glen. A son, David Bradley, was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Tomlinson. Mr. and Mrs. David Briggs announced the birth of their daughter, Karen Sue. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Anderson had a daughter, Dora Ann.
