Mark Grove was approved as the CHS Head Baseball Coach. Jim Folland and Terry McManama were approved as assistant coaches.
Todd Sherman captured his fifth feature win, clinching his third season championship at the Limaland Motorsports Park.
The Churubusco Chamber of Commerce helped with work at the Busco Park, while Churubusco Elementary students canvassed the town, picking up trash on the United Way of Whitley County’s Day of Caring.

Stephanie Martinez was crowned the 2007 CHS Homecoming Queen.
Spencer Troyer and Luther Gross were partners in the newly formed T & G Genetics.
Churubusco High School math teacher Lee Etzler was reassigned to the Athletic Director position. He was chosen as the successor to Galen Mast, who left to take a principalship at Lakeland High School.
Linda Gerig, Whitley County Auditor, announced that Governor Daniels opened a window for homeowners to file for various deductions and credits. This would help more homeowners get property tax relief in 2008.
Tommy Beezley II was third in point standings at the Gas City I-69 Speedway. He was Track Champion the prior two years.
Peter and Susie Rogers celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.
Ten Years Ago
A burglary and theft occurred at Murray Enterprises, a paving business. A person or persons stole a dump truck, an attached trailer, a Bobcat and a variety of paving and construction equipment. The crime was still under investigation.
State health officials announced 28 new human cases of West Nile virus.
Twenty-three members of the CHS Marching Band participated in Butler University’s Band Day. The event featured the clarinet players.
The CHS Class of 1929 held their annual reunion at the Magic Wand. Celebrating 73 years since graduation were Nedra Krider, Lois Gross and Ruth Nestel. Also present were Mrs. Elbert Huston and Mrs. James Guiff. The Class of 1928 (74th) class reunion also celebrated at the Magic Wand. Guy Gross, James Guiff and Kenneth Felger were the members present.
John and Almetta Green celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.
Charles and Margaret Kay celebrated their 50th anniversary with a family dinner at the Quiet Corner.

At the Town Board meeting, Mark Gensic of Bonar and Associates, Inc., opened bids from six construction firms for the storm sewer project. Gensic said he would analyze and check for mathematical errors and make a recommendation at the next meeting.
The CHS Class of 1962 celebrated their 25th class reunion at Club 30 in Columbia City.
Darren Dafforn competed against 22 drivers to win the State Championship in the 4-H Compact Tractor Operator Contest at the State Fair.
As of September 1, smoking was banned in all public buildings except in designated areas.
Churubusco racer Tom Martin was the winner at the Avilla Motor Speedway in the Detroit Iron.
Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Imbody announced the birth of their son, Paul Daniel.
50 Years Ago
Churubusco’s population was expected to double in size over the weekend with the convention of Campers Association of Indiana. Some 300 tents and campers would establish residence at Camp Me-She-Kin-No-Qua at Blue Lake.
The Whitley County tax rate of $1.307 was certified to the State Board of Tax Commissioners.
Ground was broken for a new dial telephone central office in Huntertown. When placed into service in the spring of 1963, new seven digit numbers would be assigned.
Minimum support price for the 1962 corn crop in Noble County was set at $1.21 a bushel.
Whitley County voters would decide in November whether they wanted their schools reorganized under the plan submitted by the Whitley County Reorganization Committee.

The Board of Commissioners of Whitley County passed an ordinance allowing golf carts to be driven on Whitley County roads if the owner of the golf cart requested a permit and paid a one-time fee of $50. Residents could operate golf carts only on county roads. Outdoor Indiana Magazine’s September-October issue was featuring an eight-page insert on Chain O’Lakes Park.
The Colonel Augustine De La Balme DAR Chapter honored Barbara Delores Krider for her 60 years of membership. She was presented a certificate and flowers. Barbara’s sister Katherine Chaffins, also a 60 year Chapter member, and her daughter-in-law were with her on this special occasion.
David and Karen Johnson celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a surprise party hosted by their children.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hamilton, Jr. celebrated their 25th anniversary with family and friends.

The 9th Annual Christmas Walk/Wreath Celebration was cancelled because not enough houses were secured to hold the walk. The Wreath Contest was still being held.
The 37th Annual Kruse Labor Day Auction had over 5,000 cars on display for buyers to bid on.
Janet Tallen and her Modern Shetland pony “Michigan’s Maverick” won the 2007 World Champion Classic Shetland Gelding Title at the American Shetland/American Miniature Horse Registry World Show in Columbus, Ohio. They also won that title in 2004.
Gary and Connie Gordon celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Parkview Medical Group announced that Dr. Janet S. Prendergast, D.O. had joined Whitley Medical Associates.
Tara Dice was awarded the Champion Shropshire Market Lamb at the Indiana State Fair. She also won Reserve Champion Showman at the Fair.
The crowd attending the Annual Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival far exceeded the 150,000 anticipated.
Churubusco Police investigated a break-in at Paint-It, Inc. on South Main Street. Access was through the rear of the building where the thief or thieves made off with paint equipment and supplies.
Steven and Tonya Jacobs announced the birth of their twin sons, Nicolas and Nathan.
Matthew and Katrina Pequignot announced the birth of their son, Conner Lee.
25 Years Ago
Two new businesses opened their doors in Churubusco, Precision Sharpening, owned by Dan Millikan and Teagues Welding Service, owned by Ben Teague and his two sons, Doug and Kevin.
The current officers of the Smith-Green Committee for Citizens in Education were re-elected. Elected for a second term were Carl Maucione, president, Sue Lewis, vice-president, Mary Tomlins Rynearson, secretary and Neil Hanni, treasurer.
A chapter of the National Sewing Guild was established in Fort Wayne. A neighborhood group was organized in Churubusco at the Howell House. The N.S.G. was an organization that promoted home sewing through seminars and classes. The neighborhood group was the working unit of the guild; sharing and support helped the individual sewer gain new insight and enthusiasm.
Cary and Amy Blake announced the birth of their son, Jimmy Kipp.
50 Years Ago
The new school year opened with a record enrollment, approaching the 1,000 mark and the prospect of putting four new class rooms into use.
Guy Jagger was a winner in the state contest of the Indiana Tractor Pull Association held in Kirklin, Indiana. He took first place in the 7,400 pound class.
Three women who had escaped from the Women’s State Prison in Indianapolis were captured near Fortmeyer’s Corners.
The General Telephone Company said the coming of All Number Calling (ANC) to the Fort Wayne area did not mean patrons may dial their own long-distance calls.
The largest blood donation in Whitley County took place when the blood mobile visited Columbia City. The quota set was 125 pints, but with a special effort to increase donations, a total of 160 pints was collected.

One Year Ago
Dr. Russell Gilliom, D.D.S., announced his upcoming retirement the end of September. After 40 years in the profession, Gilliom said he felt God calling him in a different direction. He planned to practice dentistry on the mission field.
One hundred fifteen athletes from Whitley County’s three schools took advantage of the $5 EKG screenings. The money raised, $575, was donated to the Tyler Andreas Memorial Football Scholarship, established by his family and friends to pay tribute to him and honor his memory.
Andrew Biddle earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Wolf Lake Boy Scout Troop 509.
The Scoop Shoppe, with 26 hand dipped flavors of ice cream, was now open behind Subway in Churubusco.

Three generations set records at the “SLP Indiana State Fair Bench Press Championships.” Karsten Lehner, a junior at CHS, lifted as a novice and benched 235 lbs. His Dad, Chad Gudakunst, lifted as a novice and benched 450 lbs. Lehner’s grandfather, Fred Gudakunst, at over 65, lifted 270 lbs. All three set state records in their divisions and all three received First Place.
Don Orig and Gerry Nagael of Willowrush Promotions, Inc., debuted their antique show at the Classic City Center in Auburn to coincide with the annual Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival.
The Churubusco Chamber of Commerce held its 11th annual Community Picnic featuring many entertaining activities, good food and the Chamber versus Firemen softball game.

Authorities confirmed the identity of the man’s body found in the corn field near Anderson Road as that of James Piatt. He died from multiple gunshot wounds. Piatt had been missing since July 9.
Judy Geiger retired after 30 years of service at Dana Corporation. Her plans were to play golf and shop.
The Churubusco High School construction class under direction of Mark Grove, was looking for area citizens in need of a small storage shed. The class would furnish labor; the owner would furnish materials and moving the facility to their property.
Whitley County Prosecutor John Whiteleather, Jr. objected to a request of sentence modification by Stephanie Smith. Her original sentence was eight years for her part as an accomplice in the robbery and murder of Donald Sunheimer.
Junior and Carol Bender observed their 50th wedding anniversary.
Terry and Candi Ross celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Galen, Jr. and Taya Walden announced the birth of their son, Galen Earl III.

James Horne was sworn in to serve on the Churubusco Town Board. He would serve the remainder of Donald Swoverland’s term.
George Dingledly, governor of Rotary District 654, addressed the Churubusco Rotary Club in which he challenged the local group to increase membership and to include women. There were no women members of the Churubusco Club.
Tom Beezley and Tom Martin both claimed the season championships in their classes at the Avilla Motor Speedway.
Herb and Joyce Ohlwine celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Curt and Monica Collinsworth announced the birth of their son, Travis Ryan.
Specials at Rich’s Super Valu included a gallon of Borden’s 2% milk for $1.19 and two pounds of coffee for $3.89

Dr. Alvin Link, pastor of the First Church of God, was named to the pastorate of the Blue River Church of God and the Thorncreek Church of God.
For the second year in a row, the team of Harry Worden and Lamoile Ford, along with team sponsor, Clarence Raypole, picked up the championship of the Men’s Golf League.
Cheryl German was one of the eight contestants for the honor of State Pork Queen at the State Fair.
Dr. John Whitcomb, professor of Old Testament at Grace Theological Seminary, conducted a one-day conference at Burr Oak Baptist Church.
Jacob Kell was recognized for saving the life of friend Anson Warner when Warner was overcome by acid fumes. The Huntertown Lions Club presented him with a plaque.

Carey Jacquay announced the opening of her new photo studio at 201 N. Main Street.
Tommy Beezley ran third in his heat race and ninth in the “A” Main at the Lima Speedway. He was still in third place in points.
Backpacks and school supplies were donated to CES courtesy of Operation Backpack. McDonald’s and United Way of Whitley County teamed with other businesses to promote the drive locally.
Bob and Betty Egolf celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Todd and Heather Lortie announced the birth of their triplets, Braylen Jo, Boone Allen and Brystol Renee.
Josh and Bria Erwin announced the birth of their son, Peter Joshua.

The Smith-Green School Board passed a revised version of the random drug and alcohol testing program that was to begin October 1. The tests would be given on a weekly basis on up to ten students in grades 7 – 12. Students affected were ones on athletic teams, extracurricular clubs and anyone driving to school.
Dominion Ventures withdrew their petition to have 37+ acres in Blue Lake Community Resort rezoned to expand. The group may present a revised plan at a later date.
Dr. Renel Alarie broke ground on the new Alarie Chiropractic Center in Columbia City. The project was scheduled for completion in December.
Seven residents of Churubusco filed to fill four positions in the November Election. Vying for three Town Council seats were Kenneth Bohde, John Hart, Pat Stanford, Frank Kessler, Lea Ann Herron and Vivian Rosswurm. Gerri Johnson was running for Churubusco Town Clerk-Treasurer.
Ten Years Ago
Two of the three men charged in the armed robbery of Farmers & Merchants Bank in Churubusco pled guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court. Kareen Gaines and Schimar Reddic, both of Fort Wayne, would be sentenced the middle of September. The sentence range for a Class B felony was 6 – 20 years.
Brittany Grove competed at the State Fair with her mare “My Lady Jennifer” and brought home Champion Saddle Type – Showmanship, Jr. Division; Reserve Grand Champion Saddle Type Showmanship; Champion Saddle Seat Pleasure, Jr. Division, and 9th place in Saddle Type Mare Halter awards.
George and Jody Gaerte celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Jim and Irene Guiff celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Shawn and Natalie Targgart announced the birth of their daughter, Isabella Grace.

Two break-ins and an attempted break-in were reported. Papa’s Place on Main Street was robbed of a small amount of cash. The Churubusco United Methodist Church office was vandalized but nothing stolen. An attempted break-in was reported by the Tanning Point located in the Century Mall.
The Whitley County Commissioners approved a 66 percent rate increase for commercial haulers at the Whitley County Landfill.
The National Weather Service forecasted the rest of August to be above normal temperatures and near normal rainfall.
Mr. and Mrs. C. Greggory Childs hosted an open house honoring Mrs. Child’s cousin, Reverend and Mrs. David Bucktrout and daughter from Yorkshire, England. Reverend Bucktrout, a Methodist minister had done a summer pulpit exchange in Silver Lake, Kansas and the family was returning to England.
Brad and Kelly Rosswurm announced the birth of their son, Daniel Joseph.
Bill and Cyndie Haber announced the birth of their second set of twins, Sarah Elizabeth and Kyle David. Brothers Matthew and Adam, age five, welcomed them home.

Judy Frazier received the Indiana State Championship trophy in solo twirling and military strutting in the 15-18 age division.
Churubusco’s Bob Aumsbaugh, driving “Dude” the Parker at the Noble County Harness Races, placed first in both heats of the 23 pace event.
A low bid of $4,000 by Wayne Asphalt was accepted for the resurfacing and sealing of several Churubusco streets.
Whitley County REMC marked its 25th anniversary. It was 25 years ago that service over REMC wires was started in Whitley County and western Allen County. The consumer owned organization had grown to approximately 4500 members.
Burt Parker observed his 93rd birthday with an open house hosted by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Parker.
Mr. an Mrs. George Williams announced the birth of their son, Rodney James.
PFC and Mrs. William Helblig announced the birth of their son, William Earl, Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bloom announced the birth of their daughter, Rhonda Lee Rae.

The Town of Churubusco Republican Party selected Gerri Johnson to run against the Democratic Candidate Madalyn Sade-Bartl in the fall election.
Gloria Linsley retired after volunteering at CES in the fourth grade for 13 years. Cindy Zollinger presented her in the CES Volunteer Spotlight.
All seats were filled, with several standing, at the Smith-Green Community Schools Board of Trustees meeting. Community members came to voice their opinions on several issues. One was there was not a formal notice of fee increases for textbooks, materials and programs. Fees were much more expensive than expected. Principal Austin Couch said fees were higher than Central Noble and Carroll but lower than Columbia City. The District said they would work with parents to set up payment plans if necessary.
Tommy Beezley II won a very exciting event at Lima Ohio’s banked dirt track over Jeff Babcock who had been the U.M.P. National Champion. Beezley was still in third in the Modified Points.
Jon and Tara Pettigrew announced the birth of their son, Ty James.
Five Years Ago
Corey Richards, CHS student, returned from a 10-day People to People Sports Ambassador Program to Holland. He participated in the wrestling tournament with eight people in his bracket. He brought home the bronze with a record of 3-1, losing only to the winner of his bracket.
State health officials released the 2007 Fireworks Related Injuries Report. As of August 1, there were 156 fireworks related injuries reported to the Indiana State Department of Health. A total of 125 occurred between June 30 and July 7. Nearly 70 percent were burns.
The Indiana Thunder 10U Softball team won the National ASA Championship in Auburn, Alabama. Churubusco resident Brooke Herendeen played on the team and helped the Thunder to a 71-4 season.
Kerry and Marna Perlich celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Holly Ann Ashton was selected Airman of the Quarter for the Indiana Air Guard 122nd Security Forces Division at Baer Field in Fort Wayne.
Officer Chad Fulkerson resigned from the Churubusco Police Force. Marshal John Hart told the Council he would like to hire Reserve officer Adam Swinehart who had been a Reserve officer for three years.
The Busco Economic Development Corporation officially closed. The money left in the treasury of the Churubusco EDC was presented to the Whitley County EDC. The Whitley County EDC was now responsible for the marketing and economic growth projections in all of Whitley County, including Churubusco.
Van transportation was available for Whitley County seniors through the Whitley County Council on Aging. The service made regular trips to Warsaw and Fort Wayne.
Bill and Christine Stienbarger announced the birth of their son, Wade Colten.
Tim and Amy Pittenger announced the birth of their daughter, Mackenzie Ann.

WANE-TV came to Churubusco to film for part of a feature series aired on the news program. The crew filmed at Churubusco High School and the Town Park.
Donald G. Swoverland resigned as a member of the Churubusco Town Board of Trustees due to the fact he no longer lived in the Corporate Limits of Churubusco.
The Class of CHS 1967 held their class reunion with dinner and dancing at the Columbia City Moose Lodge.
William and Sharon Addis celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Reverend and Mrs. Richard Kistler celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.
Lynda and Eddie Arnold announced the birth of their daughter, Brittany Elizabeth.
Mr. and Mrs. Jon Gaff announced the birth of their son, Joseph Lynn.

Devoyd Leitch, owner of Leitch’s Grocery and Market, announced plans for a supermarket to be constructed on the land purchased from the Victor Gasket Company.
Diana Surfas, who recently won the seven-year old State Championship in the United States Baton Twirling Association State Contest, brought home a national honor. Diana won third place in the Grand National United States Baton Twirling Contest in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Two special deer hunts were announced to reduce localized herds. The hunts would be November 22, 23 and 24 and 450 would be at Crane Depot and 750 at Camp Atterbury. Names would be drawn in September at the State Office Building. Because of the rough terrain, the hunts were restricted to men only.
