One Year Ago

The Churubusco Masonic Lodge would not be serving the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner this year.

Murray Asphalt was awarded the bid to construct a new road on Mill Street from Old Mill Place east to the county line for $32,700. This was necessary because of new water lines.

The Churubusco area History Center was up and going on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Grace Cartwright and Lukus Troyer were given the Leadership Award at the Green Township 4-H Achievement Night.

Representative Marlin Stutzman paid a visit to Churubusco High School where he listened to and discussed student presentations on how to reduce the national debt. 

Shannon Kuznar, a member of Purdue University’s Ballroom and Latin Dance Team Newcomer Division, placed 7th in the Rumba and made semi-finals in Waltz at the USA National Collegiate Dance Championship in Columbus, Ohio.

It was approved at the Whitley County Commissioners meeting to purchase new, fuel efficient vehicles for some county employees. They had been using handed down Crown Victoria police vehicles that were no longer efficient.
VFW Veterans of WWII and Vietnam shared memories with Cub Scout Group No. 3081 in honor of Veterans’ Day.
Connor Hogeston ran his first marathon, the Veterans’ Marathon in Columbia City. He ran the 26.2 miles in three hours and 15 minutes, coming in first and winning his age group.
Robin Wright was named to chair the 2011 fundraising campaign for the United Way of Whitley County. The goal was $260,000.
Five Years Ago
The Churubusco Chamber of Commerce presented Chris Tomlinson, owner of Gonink, with the Business of the Year Award. He created the Chamber’s website and helped design promotional material for the Chamber.
The Churubusco football team won the IHSAA Class 1A Regional Championship, defeating the Triton Trojans 28-14. They advanced to Semi-State where they would meet the defending state champs from Sheridan.
An analysis by Indiana Chamber of Commerce Political Director, Michael Davis, revealed 38.1 percent of incumbent mayors lost in Tuesday’s election. Of Indiana’s 119 cities, more than half of the city halls would have new mayors.
The soup kitchen, a mission of the United Methodist Church, delivered sixty-two meals during the first week of delivery.
Ten Years Ago
Mike and Bonnie Hazen were named Churubusco’s Citizens of the Year by the Churubusco Chamber of Commerce. Churubusco Medic 21 was named Group of the Year and Eel River Golf Course was the 2002 Business of the Year.
Dozens of businesses were damaged and five Ohio people were killed when a fast moving cold front swept though Northern Indiana and Ohio.
Drew Childs was cast as James Keller in the production of “The Miracle Worker” at Taylor University.
The Churubusco Masons were sponsoring the annual Thanksgiving Day Community Dinner.
A Noble County jury delivered a guilty verdict in the murder trial against Donald Houser in the suffocating death of 86-year-old Julie Gaerte.
Christopher and Melissa Stucker announced the birth of their daughter, Molly Jane.
Cindy Raker announced the adoption of her son, Dakota Aleksander.
25 Years Ago
The Whitley County United Way campaign had reached 93 percent of their goal with $102,661 collected.
The Churubusco Town Board approved the purchase of a trench box for town employees. Jack Burks, Town Manager, recommended the purchase for the safety of town employees.
“The Miracle Worker” was presented in the Jason Smith Auditorium at CHS.
Employees from the company, Mr. Sandman, had been sandblasting and painting many of the buildings in Churubusco.
Dick and Millie Troyer deeded 100 acres of virtually untouched land on St. Joseph Island, Canada to Marion College.
Cliff and Laura Cornewell announced the birth of their son, Justin Robert.
50 Years Ago
A 40 by 60 foot, concrete block research building for Indiana University, would be constructed at Crooked Lake, north of Columbia City, under a new grant of $126,500 from the National Science Foundation.
Dan “Hoss” Blocker, star of the “Bonanza” TV show, had a teacher- student reunion with Lloyd Hawkins of LaOtto. “Hoss” was a student of Hawkins in Reserve Officers Training School at Texas Military Institute.
Whitley County’s Neighborhood Extension Organizations honored their members with Producers of the Year Awards. Russell Johnson was selected as Swine Producer of the Year, and Guy Jagger was named Outstanding Beef Producer.
A total of 1,363 teacher-parent visitations were made in the week’s “open house,” according to Principals Jason Smith and Clare Alexander.
Lee Gorby, third grade CES student, was selected for top honors in the community’s summer reading program, sponsored by the Woman’s Cultural Club. He received a $1 prize from the Truth and a free book.
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Harris celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.

In the Town election, Frank Kessler retained his seat and was joined by two new-comers to the council, Alan Malcom and Mark Pepple. Madalyn Sade-Bartl was elected as the new Clerk-Treasurer.
Churubusco United Methodist Soup to Shut-In Ministry was ready to start their deliveries every Tuesday through March.
Churubusco’s football season came to an end when defending State Champions, Bishop Luers won with a 34-7 score.
With a decrease in the projected 2012 average daily membership, state funding would also decrease. The School Board signed a resolution to transfer $200,000 in unencumbered and unused funds to the Rainy Day Fund to be used to make up shortfalls in state funding.
A large deer harvest was forecasted for 2011.  Hunters had a third straight record, having tagged 134,004 in 2010.
Five Years Ago
The CHS Football Team celebrated its Sectional Championship after defeating Adams Central 17-14.  They now would face the Triton Trojans.
In the municipal elections, the top three for Town Council were Frank Kessler, Vivian Rosswurm and John Hart.  Geri Johnson was Clerk-Treasurer.
New member Nicole Singer, was welcomed to the Churubusco Rotary Club.
“The Unusual Suspects” was the fall show of the CHS Find Arts Department
Whitley County EMS Department, in cooperation with the Churubusco Fire Department, was hosting two open houses. Guests would tour the station; learn about emergency practices and information on EMT training classes.
UPS announced an expansion of its packaging hub in Fort Wayne, creating 25 new jobs.
Scott and Dena Jacquay announced the birth of their son, Logan Wade.
Ten Years Ago
The General Election turn-out in Whitley County was 45%.
Keith Wyss and Ned Egolf secured the two at-large Smith-Green School Board seats.
Road crews finished up the Line Street project.  New water lines, loops and road resurfacing took several weeks to finish.
Local runner Patrick Gross was a participant in the Chicago Marathon where he finished 497th out of 31,108 runners.
Churubusco Fine Arts Department’s fall play was “Clean Slate.”
Pit Stop Pizza, owned by Chad Brenneke, treated free slices of pizza during trick or treat. In two hours, 460 slices were handed out.
Adam Lich was invited to join a team of cross country athletes from forty states to participate in the famous San Silvestre de Barcelona Race.
Tom and Lois Cormany celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Bret and Kari Anderson announced the birth of their son, Maxton Lee.

Many residents noticed the Indiana University insignia north of town on U.S. 33. The I.U. pond, owned by James Williams, was reported to house minnows.
This week’s Churubusco Truth was the last week to be a tab size newspaper. It was changing to the standard size because the column format was easier to read.
The Whitley County United Way campaign had reached 78 percent of their goal.
Don Runyan was named Account Manager for the Columbia City and LaGrange districts of United Telephone of Indiana.
Everett and Aldena Harris celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Lewis and Janet Telschow celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Dan and Cindy Nestel announced the birth of their daughter, Emily Suzanne.
Bill and Pam Fogle announced the birth of their son, Zachary Phillip.
Gene and Carolyn Tope announced the birth of their son, Andrew Jordan.
Wayne and Holly Gibson announced the birth of their daughter, Christy Lyn.

Whitley County voters defeated the proposed school re-organization by a hefty 2-1 margin.
Diane Graft was named third alternate for a trip to Miami Beach in the Purdue Apple Pie contest.
Harold McCoy, Vice President of McCoy’s Churubusco Lumber Company, attended the annual convention of National Retail Lumber Dealers in Chicago.
Fall fishing in northeastern Indiana received a boost with the release of 7,200 rainbow trout.  Lake Gage received 2,000, South Twin Lake and Pretty Lake each received 2,000 and Oliver Lake was stocked with 1,200.
The 1962 United Fund drive was at 33 percent of their goal.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gordon announced the birth of Zania Lee.
Mr. and Mrs. Galen Gilbert announced the birth of Michael William.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gatwood announced the birth of Mark Allen.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Baughman announced the birth of Marla Jean.

The Churubusco Eagles defeated Madison-Grant to advance to the Sectional Championship against Fort Wayne Bishop Luers.
Churubusco FFA team with Jenna Uecker, Brett Uecker, Lucas Troyer and Colton Geiger, took top honors at the State Wildlife Habitat Development Contest at The Purdue University Martel I Forest Research Center. Busco FFA beat 23 other teams from across the state giving them the opportunity to represent Indiana FFA at the National Wildlife Habitat Development Contest in Texas. Two other teams represented Churubusco and placed 16th and 18th overall.
“Radium Girls” a historical drama based on the events in and around Orange, New Jersey between 1918 and 1928, when radium was considered a cure-all, was presented at the Jason Smith Auditorium.
The 231st anniversary of the only Revolutionary War battle in northeastern Indiana between Colonel Augustin de LA Balme and his troops and Chief Little Turtle and his warriors, was commemorated near the Eel River in Union Township, Whitley County.
Five Years Ago
Greg Hockemeyer was named United Way Chair for the fall campaign. The goal was $230,000 that would benefit programs in 2008.
Six residents were running for three open positions on the Churubusco Town Council. On the Democratic ticket were Lea Ann Herron, Frank Kessler and Vivian Rosswurm. Running on the Republican ticket were Kenneth Bohde, John Hart and Pat Stanford.
Busco graduate and film maker Jessica Petelle-Slagle received I U’s College 2007 Outstanding Young Alumni Award at a banquet honoring her and two other alumni. Will Shortz and Jeffrey Wolen were also honored. After three years in Los Angeles, she transplanted her independent film work to her home state.
Brad Myers received the Kentucky Colonel Award, the highest honor awarded by the Commonwealth. The awards are presented for contributions to the community, state or nation. Mr. Myers had done a lot of volunteer work and was one of the first certified eye technicians to harvest human eye tissue for the Indiana Lions Eye Bank. He had received numerous awards for his volunteer work.
Churubusco Eagles stopped Eastside during the second round Sectional action and would meet Adams Central for Sectional Championship.
CHS Cheerleaders participated in the Indiana High School Preliminary Cheerleading Competition where they became State Finalists. They would compete at the State Finals in New Castle.
Ten Years Ago
Churubusco resident Rusty Reed (“Turtle Man”), owner of Blackwater Turtle Refuge, got his long awaited chance to address the DNR and a six-member senate panel. The senate panel and DNR did not make a decision but agreed to work out a compromise that would insert a provision to allow Reed to acquire a previously denied permit.
The Worldwide Youth for Christ program was off to a great start in Churubusco.  Patrick Rowland was hired as the new counselor.
The five candidates running for two at-large school board seats, Randall Zolman, Ned Egolf, Keith Wyss, Tanya Young and Rebecca Rennaker, held a public forum where the public could ask them questions.
The Busco Eagles fell to the Jimtown Jimmies in Sectional play.
Marc and DeAnna Royer announced the birth of their daughter, Abigail Lynn.
25 Years Ago
Bluffton Rubber Company entered into an agreement with Molten Corporation of Hiroshima, Japan. The two companies formed a joint venture to manufacture and market custom parts for the new Mazda plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
The Churubusco Chamber of Commerce honored Everett Jones, Churubusco State Bank President, for 60 years of business in Churubusco. George Diller was named Citizen of the Year by the Chamber for the work he had done as Churubusco Community Park Director.
The Dana Corporation Foundation donated $2,000 to Whitley County Opportunity Center, Inc. for their new parent resource center.
Michael and Irene Fulk announced the birth of their daughter, Danielle Ann.
Todd and Debra Gross announced the birth of their son, Levi Eugene.
50 Years Ago
U.S. Representative E. Ross Adair, entering his final stages of re-election campaigning, made a stop in Churubusco.
Churubusco policeman Bob Butler was presented a $50 check from the National Automobile Association in recognition of his efforts to recover a stolen car for Gene Gordon.
The Huntertown School presented its first musical comedy “Mr. Crane of Sleepy Hollow.”
Harvey Kellog, county agent in Cass County, was appointed to the same position in Whitley County, to fill the vacancy created when Donald Clayton resigned.
Paul Hawkins, formerly of Churubusco, who with Marc Rojtman formed the American Tractor Company here that later merged with J.I. Case, was once again associated with Rojtman. He was the manager of an original French Chateau estate on Upper Long Island, New York, that Mr. and Mrs. Rojtman had acquired.

Churubusco’s Town Marshal Chad Fulkerson had been working at the Smith-Green Schools as a resource officer one day a week. The school wanted him two days a week without being called away for his regular duty. They were working on a grant for a full-time officer. The school requested the town pay Fulkerson for two days work at the school and also his replacement until January 1. The school thought different funding would be available then. The request was tabled until the next meeting.
Jennifer Lortie, DVM, opened Countryside Animal Clinic, Inc., located south of Kimmell.
State Representative Kathy Heuer encouraged local fourth graders to participate in an essay competition in conjunction with “Indiana Statehood Day,” a celebration of Indiana’s 195th birthday.
Landowners experiencing deer damage to crops, forest regeneration or landscaping could partner with the DNR’s Hunters Helping Farmers program to control deer.

Sandy Hamilton, formerly of Pampered Palace, opened her own salon, Sandy’s Hair Salon on Harrold Road at Blue Lake.
The Churubusco High School Choral Department, under the direction of Daniel Hile, presented its Dinner Show featuring New Era.
Smith Township Trustee Don Amber attended the Town Council meeting to express concerns about the town’s future annexation. Also at the meeting was Kristi Sturtz, the annexation consultant. She addressed some of the concerns.  Council President Viv Rosswurm said the Council shouldn’t talk about the annexation until the results came in from the figures Sturtz was compiling.
Mark Jesse from Bonar Group presented a preliminary engineering report for the water utilities improvement project. The project cost was over $2,362,500. Residential user rates would increase from $22.50 minimum to $52.55 over a three year period.
Ten Years Ago
The last of the men, Casey Atkins, involved in the armed robbery of Farmers & Merchants Bank in April, was sentenced to 20 years in Whitley County Circuit Court.
At the Town Council meeting, member John Barrett reported that the State Board of Accounts had directed the town to cut $90,000 from the 2003 budget. Barrett suspected the harsh cut request was due to lower County Adjusted Gross Income Tax.
The Smith-Green Community Board of School Trustees approved a resolution to transfer $52,148 from Capital Projects 2003 fund to cover a 2003 shortfall the school was experiencing.
The Churubusco Chamber of Commerce was continuing its receptions at local businesses with its “Chamber After Five” at the Churubusco Fire Department in honor of local firemen, emergency and EMS volunteers.
Gary and Carolyn Wright celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house. As part of the celebration, the family enjoyed a western Caribbean cruise in June.
Mark and Denise Grove celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
25 Years Ago
The inventory of Floyd’s Auto Sales was auctioned off by Schraders, closing the Ford dealership in Churubusco.
The CHS Cheerleading sponsors and cheerleaders attended the School Board meeting to request that the cheerleaders be allowed to increase the height of their mounts from one and a half person to two and a half. The height was decreased the past year after several cheerleaders fell from a considerable height. If the cheerleaders could come up with a safer way, the board might alter their decision.
The Churubusco High School I.C.E. program had 22 seniors and 18 employers from Churubusco and the surrounding area.
Gene and Eleanor Krider observed their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.
Clyde and Beulah Zolman celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house.
50 Years Ago
The Churubusco Town Board issued a warning against blocking alleys in town.  Several complaints had been received that drivers could not get through public alleys.
The following was the school plan ballot to be voted on – Shall a community school corporation be formed as provided in the Reorganization Plan of the Whitley County Committee for the Reorganization of School Corporations? – Under the proposed plan, the township trustees and advisory boards would no longer administer the schools. A school board of seven members would run all the schools in the county, to be known as “Whitley County Schools.”
